  • The Hows And Whys of Level Design - Released!

    • Hourences
    • June 25, 2007 at 10:23 PM

It talks about what not to do floorplan wise, why not, and what kind of things would improve it. That should give you the idea of how to design your routes.

How would you have rather seen that part been described? A step by step walkthrough of building a lay out?

Might have been possible although you need to keep in mind that it needs to be pretty universal. A CS lay out is not a Quake lay out... It is very hard to write something down that is true for -all- action and fps games.

Havent played it, only watched the vid.

Doesnt really appeal to me. I wouldnt say the gameplay is UT2004 onslaugth like, but it does feel like a mess. I kind of get the feeling that it is prolly fun for noobs, but doesnt allow for enough tactics and strategy for the advanced players. Then again, I havent played it and Im not a BF player.

The map doesnt look great in the video btw. Especially the interiors, very 2002-2003'ish in terms of looks and polycount.

It would have prolly been cooler if it was much more dark gloomy alien planet strogg like - Quake like. More stylized instead of this more or less generic sci fi style in the usual earth like mountain range.

You're are all too modest or scared:)

I understand the problem but there is no need to go into details with the answers. Like Zackers answers, those are broad. It doesn't tear down the company he's working for at all. Nothing wrong with broad answers.

Other answers I got are like "I don't like all the relocation a job in the gamesindustry requires" and "deadlines are always such a stressy times".

Again, those kind of answers won't have any influence on your career.

I'm especially interested in any friends or colleagues that might be interested. Coders or so.

So, I've decided to take the whole book thing to the next level and work on a new and especially bigger new book. My new book is going to be about the game industry in general. Aimed at starters it will to do two things. First of all it talks them through the pro and contras of our industry. Basically, what sucks and what rocks. And secondly it provides tips and advice on how to apply, get hold of a job, what to look out for, how to look for a studio that suit your needs and so on.

To spice all of that up, my intention is to add a bunch of interviews again. Just like last time. Only, this time they'll be smaller and I need a lot more of them. 30 or so would do.

Anybody feel like helping me out ?

-You get to be in a book, that's cool man!

-You need to be a game industry professional so no modders and students please (sorry).

-It are only three questions/half a page I need.

-Any game industry profession will do!

You can reply in this thread, or email the answers to me if you don't feel like disclosing them to the whole world just yet.

    My Email: [email protected]

    QUESTIONS

    http://users.pandora.be/Hourences/interview.doc

THE ANSWERS MUST FIT IN A SINGLE PAGE OF THIS DOC OR IT WILL MESS UP MY LAY OUT!

One thing to note: I don't know how many will reply to this, but I only got space for a few interviews. I need a mixed set of interviewees. If 20 level designers are going to reply, I really can't guarantee you will all be in. The book should not turn into another level design book.

If you know this really awesome cool programmer/audio guy/something-non-level-designer-ish at work or wherever, and you think he might be interested, send him the link!

I need a really diverse set of interviews.

    Thanks!

The 100 or so action movies in which trinity church in New york is used spring to my mind...

I doubt they would have made such a big fuzz about it if it were a movie.

    Sounds cool to me.

Althought it may be handy to put the location of the guy in the topic title. Could be a good way to be recruit/recruit people but I dont want to click a hundred names to find out most of them are located on the other end of the world and thus unreachable.

Focus is obviously on gameplay, and it plays well, but then again, you didnt made the gameplay..

Graphics are sober, but solid. It hangs together and there are no weaknesses in the design. Its not ugly to look at either.

It would have been cooler if it was your own floorplan, kinda like DavidM DM Lego for UT1. Simple yet rocksolid looks, great gameplay.

Yeah, but would it run? UE3 can handle soft shadows too but Ive never seen any game that actually uses them since it runs so slowly.

Same for all of the screenshots in this thread, Im not really seeing it anywhere, all shadows are sharp. Only the middle architecture image comes somewhat close, but it might also just be the ambient light doing it..

Looks decent, but compared to most "next" gen stuff it doesnt look that different though.

I only see shard shadows everywhere, can the engine even handle soft shadows that fade out dependent on the distance of the lightsource?

    Worst floor texture ever btw:)

  • What engine does Fable run on?

    • Hourences
    • May 22, 2007 at 4:29 PM

Its not Unreal or I would have known.

    In house perhaps?

Does it really matter what it runs on? Im sure you could achieve similar effects with other engines, its just a tool.

Although the whole development sounded like an ordeal, this is just one, personal take on it, so I guess you should take it with a grain of salt.

Id rather take the employee's word for it, than some manager's whos used to prettify crap, litteraly crap.

Terrible story, a shame this stuff is happening frequently and too people realize that this is not the way to go...

  • What kind of questions were you asked at your interview?

    • Hourences
    • May 18, 2007 at 10:37 AM

Im currently writing a piece on that.

The current questions I have, which are the most common ones I think, are:

    Quote

Who are you? Can you describe yourself briefly?

What have you worked on and made in the past?

    Why should we hire you?

What kind of addition would you be to our team?

    Why are you interested?

    What's your best quality?

    What's your worst?

Where and how do you see yourself in five years?

What do you expect of your office? Any special requirements?

Would you be interested in extra schooling?

What kind of games do you like or dislike and why?

Can you handle working full-time 40 hours a week on a project without getting bored or distracted?

Can you handle a relocation without running into emotional trouble and homesickness?

I would be motivated to do something with very limited ressources. i like JonM's idea.sp, 2048x2048 etc. is just too much time intensive. A nice little contest like the low poly modeling contests would be nice. Something that can be done in 1-2 nights.

Mobile game level. Metroid prime on the DS like levels.

Ive always wanted to do something like that, oldskool low poly stuff and heavy texture use to try and squishe some details out of the very blocky looks.

Problem with your contests is that you all want to do it in source, that kinda eliminates a lot of people and sticks to a certain look and feel. You best need a contest that fits a lot of different engines and platforms.

  • How many of you wore a suit to your interview?

    • Hourences
    • April 23, 2007 at 8:58 AM

I dont even have a suit, let alone that ive ever worn one for an interview. Ive seen very very few people come by for an interview in a suit...

Youve said it yourself, if the company cares more about how you look then about your work you might want to consider applying elsewhere.

And I dont think your professors got a clue of how the industry operates do they?

I talked to turbo squid about possibly doing maps for them at one point. Glad someone is doing it.

Likewise, I was also involved at some point. A shame they abandoned Unreal.

Im freelancing for Webzen/Huxley at the moment, and Im also still active for Khaeon.

We are nearing the end of our game Spellborn after 3 years. The end is almost near.

  • The toughest game levels/missions

    • Hourences
    • April 15, 2007 at 1:53 PM

I found a lot of the GTA missions, especially in the first set of 3D GTA's since the missions, very frustrating.

Timers running out, planes that just cant be controlled easily, my team mate shooting my other team mate thus ending the damn mission and so on.

I basically hate anything that has a timer and stresses me out, likewise in Sonic on the DS, the water level. You can only stay under water for X seconds so you need to run through vast underwater areas at top speed if you want to make it, if you happen to hit some moving pillar or an enemy on your way to the other side you can start over again. Damn frustrating since you cant always help it that you hit something, especially since the game moves quite fast.
