  • How many minutes to midnight we are going to see?

    • Kosmo
    • February 27, 2006 at 10:39 AM

I assume that all of you know the Doomsday Clock, and that the clock is at 7 minutes right now.

But the recent changes in world politics and Iran trying to acquire nuclear weapons, and the uncertainty of what countries have actual nuclear weapons or the means to produce them or sell components crucial on building one.

The world has been in 2 Minutes to Midnight in 1953 to 1960, which has been closest it has been, but numbers have since become more realistic even though the amount of nuclear weapons in the world has increased over ten fold.

This is not your doomsday discussion so no wise crackig please, but genuine input on the matter.

That being said, 9/11 was not justified, just as these riots and threats of death are not justified.

Yes it was, I said it, I'm not america, and I still said it, it's all words, meaning nothing.

Most of the anti-somefancything people are just saying things. I have met people who were at the same time in a anti-McDonald's rally with me that said "McDonald's is raping rainforests" and at the same time the dude was smoking a cig, can you imagine the inanity of that.

Most of hating something is done out of not knowing anything, not being any smarter than the person you oppose. As like we don't know jack about muslims and their religion and culture we bash them, they don't know jack about our religious beliefs and culture and they think we are all hitlers and bash us.

I think Zilla said this like a decade ago, but most things are done out of ignorance, and untolarance.

That is all, go to bed.

    Nice input.

Yeah, I was always assuming that the "10% of potential capacity" means that the things we use our brain for only uses 10% of our potential brain capacity of what it could be if humans could harness the brain correctly, not like that the other 90% is just useless flesh that could be cut out and still be functioning properly.

There have been alot of tests where scientists scan brain patterns and waves of very smart people and some normal people, in Prism (a finnish science tv show) there was a documentary about brain and there was something about such a test and they said that some mensa dude was using way more of his brain than the "control" subjects who were in the limits of normal people (I guess capable of learning stuff but not necessarily automatically understand things like the mensa dude who was like a god).

There is so little empirical evidence of anything like this, so it's almost impossible to say if it is true or false, man knows so little of his own brain.

The 1TB to 100TB in relative computer capacity is based on the theory of neurons being able to store "one bit" that is to say on or off I guess, and the estimated amount of neurons in brain and calculating something in that sense. But it's most likely that brain just compresses and uses the information so much more efficiently that we can't compare it to a computer, not even in the year 2030 since brain stores everykind of data, from human motor functions to images and feelings, computers mainly store porn

But I like where we are going. I wish more people would give input.

I was wondering this a bit since I haven't been keeping my eye out for the science forums for discussion about brain for a while, I lost my interest because all scientists just throw around wild theories and nothing remotely scientific.

So what is happening on the old brain department these days? What is the latest hot theory about human brain, few latest comments about human brain what I can remember are something like "humans use only 10% of their potential capacity" and that "human brain can store from around 1TB to 100TB of information with much more efficient data compression and storing than computer ofcourse".

I have always found this forum to be a great source for scientific talk since people here actually pay attenttion to these kind of things.

This forum should be renamed to be "Political, Religious and Scientific Discussion" since this is not just Political discussion.

Only thing I can say is that Evil Empires always win

    Location: the West Pacific

The Empire of The glass is half full is a tiny, safe nation, remarkable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The large government concentrates mainly on Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are secondary priorities. The average income tax rate is 22%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Trout Farming industry, followed by Soda Sales and Uranium Mining.

Crime is well under control. The glass is half full's national animal is the evil badger and its currency is the soul.

And yes, I believe we (the oh so good western people) have a much better world. For obvious reasons like:- women are treated equall with men

    - we have a better lawsystem

    - we are more educated, thus better capable of making decisions of all nature

    - we have more rights

    - we are less corrupt

    - we are wealthier

    - we take care of our elderly and needy

    - we have FREEDOM (of speech) damnit!

And I can go like this for much longer.

    Display More

Even if I agree with you right there, this begs a question, how do we define "better".

For example, better lawsystem? Even if our lawsystem is quite good for judging people who do crimes equally, our lawsystem doesn't make breaking the law impossible, and the same problem remains, people are breaking the law and finding loopholes. So is it that the process is better since the results are much as twisted as any ther lawsystem.

I support the freedom of speech, and I like it, as much as anyone, but people don't seem to understand that freedom of speec is not just the freedom to speak about political views but it is also a responsibility, to take responsibility about what you say and the consequenses it might have.

Western media and the freedom of speech they practise is more like a shoutfest where people just insult each other and run away to hide, it's not any kind of discussion, it's down right childish.

I just want us to seach my theory on Europe and western society in general. In our society religion is not so centered in our everyday lifes and political decisions, and I that makes our society so different from middle east and far east. I came to the conclusion that many major events have led our society to estrange from religion as the major influence in our society.

Such major events may have been the industrial revolution and the growing level of education, one major event that has definedly been one of the things that have furthered the so called "dying of religious influence" has been communism in Europe, communists didn't take so kindly to religions and religious people, also World Wars have had a big influence in it too, it was the first modern time where a group of religious people have been systematically terminated.

All these events and many more in the past centuries have molded our society in to what it is today. All major events that has had effect in major scale. Same kind of things haven't happened in Middle East and that is why they are still so much ruled by their religion in everyday life and it has effects in their political stance and views too.

If Europe were still under the influence of christianity we wouldn't be any different from Middle East.

I understand that, but the point being that they were and still are looking for an excuse to cause trouble, so I thought that it would be cool not to give them the excuse.

I don't like the whole pushing of people to the edge thing, when I was in school, there was this kid, small nerd guy and all that, got picked on by some jackass in the school, and one day out of the blue during gymnastics the kid hits the bully in the face with a hockey stick. Wrecked his teeth and almost popped his eye, nasty, and all this for what? Did the bully get something out of it? Did the little nerd get something else than a micro second of satisfaction before realizing that the is in a world of trouble?

These kind of pointless things that people do just beucase they can do is just a waste of everyones time and in this case, several lifes, sure the cartoonist didn't have the insight to tell what was going to come, but I would have more sense than do such a drawing.

Yeah, but he could have thought about making it first, and even after he did it, apologise, even if his apologies wouldn't have had so great impact, but it would have saved some lifes atleast, every life you can safe is worth some personal discomfort of an apology.

But you are absolutely right, he isn't the one and only reason, the tension between muslims and christians have been tight for long but like someone already said, he made the proverbial last straw.

But his chief editor is also a big part of the problem, he is the man/woman who decides what gets published. Also, why did other papers around the world publish it, I understand the "freedom of speech stand" that they are trying to pull, but when the conversation inside your head is "we should really make a stand for free speech and kill few people by pissing off people and directing their hatred towards innocent people, the best idea of the decade" you should really stop for a minute.

I just hope that the cartoonist who thought that it would be a good idea to do the drawings is sleeping well, knowing that he has blood of hundreds of brutally murdered innocent people in his hands.

I bet he sleeps like a baby, unless he has already killed himself.

Awww... I don't know what the twist is, I own the Ocarina o' Time, but haven't played it

But just a quickie question, if you have played Serious Sam, there is few maps where you are in a big pipe of sorts, and you can run along the walls like the whole surface had gravity, that was some awesome shit, shooting mobs in the ceiling and then running up to them.

Would that be doable in Source? It would rock some socks off.

Personally i'd like to see some completely new kind of character when it comes to people to try to conquer the world, something that people do not expect. This has gotten old. (no offense intended), which is proven by the fact that he looks like Bison. The sketch itself is pretty nice, i just don't like the character.

I like what you are saying, ofcourse when we think of strong leaders controlling large amounts of land and people it would be a dramatic military leader, Star Wars is a definition on this, the only foreign politics was a man clad in black armour.

Ofcourse the whole point of my emperor is that when you first see him you go like "oh he is propably some sort of leader and quite evil bastard, I bet he eats babies".

But I'm always open for discussion on the matter, what makes a conqueror, who is the conqueror that would be had he given the chance, Kane from command & conquer, he is too is a tired old stereotype.

    Interesting subject, none the less.

I'm going to add more bulk to his armour, now it's too much like a redman suit from Mythbusters.

I already got some good drawings on the details and the armour but they are on paper, I don't usually draw my work from start to finish on my tablet, and you can see that, my linework on the tablet is crappy.

I also thought that it would be cool to lose the cape and put some sort of leather jacket on him, I have to see where I go with this in the next few doodles.

But since we are on the subject, what do you guys think about steampunk? It's a strange genre and usually mixed up with basic fantasy. I love it.

    Oh great c&c guys.

What, all of a sudden my emperor is bison? Because they both wear combination hats? What the hell?

So it has nothing to do with that he is a military leader, a futuristic hitler? Oh no, it has got to be plagiarism of some fighting game character because stolve said so.

Just to be clear because you are obviously retarded as hell, here is a picture of hitler.

A 5 minute sketch of some sort of emperor for my MMORPG world that I have been building for few years now.

I just got my new Wacom Intuos 3 A4 tablet and I'm trying to get used to it, it kicks ass compared to the Volito POS that I had earlier. So the quality of the sketch is what it is, when my new monitor and memory arrives I can fire up the photoshop and do large drawings without the fear that it will crash in the middle of a sessionand corrupting my workfile (yes that has happened).

    [Blocked Image: http://www.kosmov.net/tiedostot/emperor.jpg]

The story for him is that he is some sort of Darth Vader guy, a strong psychic and fierce warrior and rules a dark empire with an iron grip, the empire is based in to a steampunk world but I think the emperor looks more like some sort of warhammer 40k guy than steampunky armored guy, meh, I have to work on that bit more when I'm working on the final version.

I'll try to post more concept sketches of the rest of the bunch.

In the UK last world cup, might have been euro cup or something for football (or to USA peeps "soccer") they banned taxi drivers having little english flags on. Saying that it was racist because over half the population are "multicultural", thats what I call retarded.

Adding to that, the English flag is a red cross on a white background....

Wow... that IS rather retard, why the hell would they ban people having their own flag in their own country.

You have just taken one of Intelligent Designs prime argument for making ID a valid thing to teach in Science class and turned it into a defense for your personal beliefs in Fairy tale stuff.

Unfortunately, anything man can make up, from Mind reading to Santa Claus, falls under that very defense. "It might not be discovered yet"

You're no better then the religious yahoos, you dont need facts or studies, faith alone suits you fine.

Nothing wrong with it, just wanted you to realize this.

I know that already, but what ever my beliefs, I know that they are bunch of fairytale at the moment, but would I want people to teach them in science class? Certainly no, there is no scientific proof for them, and might that there never will be, I have discovered them myself and I want my kids to do so too, so no bullshitting people in school

And it's not that much a matter of firm believe that something has to absolutely exist, it's more of a "wouldn't it be cool if Jedis really existed" "dude".

Like I said, as scientific as I am, I like to believe in things like Love and such, the world is much cooler that way, afterall I AM in a creative business, viewing world as cold and sterile place wouldn't work that good

I think they can't stop individual or independent organizations or companies using the red cross, it's like a country making the use of their flag illegal, especially when the use is not producing any harm to the flag or symbol itself.

And the Red Cross emblem is the swiss flag with negative colors, if you get in trouble with the RC, you can just say that it's not red cross, it's inverse swiss flag
