  • The problem of crunch time in game development

    • dux
    • May 29, 2011 at 11:54 PM

With ns2 we don't get paid overtime because it can't be afforded. So we pretty much do extra hours on the game purely out of love of the project. I'm just glad I'm able to do this from home - I really don't think I'd enjoy this if I was stuck in a shitty game studio doing some console port or something for weeks on end. I like talking to my friends and family.

Some once said to me "well if you don't like crunch time and enjoy seeing friends and family, maybe you are in the wrong industry." All I can say to that is suck my balls.

I'm just thinking aloud here, but thought it might make a good thread, I dunno. Lets find out!

I was just wondering what you guys thinking of the whole competitive gaming thing? Is the fps competitive game gone? Does it only exist in RTS form with Starcraft now? I'm not talking so much about the professional gaming as a whole where they insure their fingers for 1 million quid or anything but also the competitive clan scene of games from the likes of the past greats of Quake, counter strike and natural selection for instance.

Do you miss those styles of games and the huge amount of clans they had? Or do you prefer just being a single player type of guy kicking back and just admiring a games art and direction instead of interacting with clan mates in an organized league match?

I also think that with today's games on PC being almost always a console port - the skill factor has decreased immensely. Bad Company 2 was a good example of this for me where I found the game so easy I would get constantly banned for hacking.

And of course I work on ns2, which plans on being the next great fps competitive game on pc. (Hopefully)

Another thing I enjoy about the old competitive games are the frag movies! My old NS clan made a few, here's one I helped make of our best player:

I always thought that de_survivor was the dogs balls, was so atmospheric and played quite well at the same time.

de_piranesi was also a luscious sight, fantastic looking map. And I always loved how dark and moody de_storm was too.

My top 5 in order of WHOA factor:

    de_survivor

    de_piranesi

    de_museum

    de_chateua

    cs_havana

My top 5 in order of DAMN NICE GAMEPLAY

    de_dust2

    de_inferno

    de_aztec

    de_nuke

    cs_italy

    Fucking 2000/3 man, epic.

SOOOOOOOO Can someone change me from Raven Software to Irrational Games? I start as a Designer there on the 20th of June.

I hate to be the last one from Raven to leave on mapcore... but the winds of change are upon us!

    SO MUCH ENVY. Super congrats.

Same feeling about the combat, pretty awful.

LOl you guys suck at the game is the only problem Its very challenging, and I guess they made it this way to keep it challenging. Its not the best solution, that's for sure, but keep trying and you will get the hang of it. It's all about timing your attacks, being sword swings, magic, traps, bombs, etc. Once you get this down, you wont have trouble anymore. It gets really fun when you understand how it works.

I'm certainly no slouch at games but this just happens to be the first game I've encountered in years that has just outright cock slapped me across the mouth. My main complaints are not it's difficulty but more so the implementation and execution of the combat system itself. It's laggy, unresponsive, cumbersome and just downright annoying to use when there is a large group of enemies thanks to the horrible auto targeting system. The ballista section I had to repeat no less than 10 times until I beat it and my frustration only increased each time thanks to the inability to skip certain cutscenes.

I miss the fighting styles, I enjoyed those a lot from the first game. Especially group style.

i died 6 or 7 times during the dragon prologue. i didn't understand the combat system and the interface was never properly explained to me. having the character catch fire didn't help much either. and that bed scene definitely gave off a try-hard vibe.

Don't even get me started on that god damn dragon. I would just spontaneously combust with no explanation what so ever. I'd be running to the next little wooden building and just catch fire for no reason and die.

Nope. The combat is ruining this game for me, I am so close to uninstalling it right now - all I do is die because of how unresponsive it is. The sound is fucked as well, you have to do some silly hack with you drivers to make it play anything. Ugh.

I want to like this game but it's slapping me away.
