    Porto

FFs Porto is ugly as hell

If you come to Portugal I recommend that you visit Aveiro . The city has some of the best examples of art nouveau in Europe (Porto also has some nice ones, but everything is falling apart there ), its has a water canal running across the middle of the city, it also has some nice monuments scattered all over the city but since it's not that big it's easy to see most of them in a day or tow. It's also really close to the sea (5/10min drive), has some nice weather, nice food and easy going drunk people. Beer is also cheap.

Since I usually only play on my phone while I'm on the toilet, i prefer simple games that don't take too much time, so i recommend any game from Digital Chocolate. The last ones i got where Gold Rush, Pyramid Bloxx and Diamond Islands and they are great for when you have 10/15min to waste.

Every now and then Gameloft also publishes some decent games, but they also do all the movie, tv shows, and game franchises mobile adaptations, which most of the time are complete shit. So try to look for unfamiliar names, or game genres that are so simple that they can't fail (like card games, monopoly, mah-jong, etc) while choosing a Gameloft game and it will probably end out being good

Anyone having problems with forwarding ports should check out http://portforward.com/ you just have to choose your router model on the first screen, and then the application on the second screen, and you will get a step by step guide for that specific router and application.

That's a very confusing article, i read it twice and it's still a bit hard to understand the point (if there is one) but i don't think piracy is to be blamed in this case.

They make "games for others, Baby games, teddy bear and pony games", they depend on 3 or 4 other companies to get the game published, they apparently don't invest enough or efficiently on publicity since "the shop 100 meters from the studio didn’t even know the game was in their stock", and then they are surprised that they don't make enough money to create their own projects? What's there to be surprised about? They have a bad business model, they create games for very small demographic (babies and small children who own a NDS) that has a overly saturated market (there are hundreds of DS games for children) and have to split the profits with 3 or 4 companies and then they try to blame it on piracy?! Looks like just another case of bad management for me tbh...

The quote in the article on joystiq is cut off, here is what Shacknews cites:

Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service it's providing," he said. "It's exploiting a lot of small guys. For us big guys, we're going to sell the units and it will be fine.

  • mitering corners - reduce visleafs? good for optimization?

    • BaRRaKID
    • October 2, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Miter corners are good for optimization if they are "inside corners", since you save one "face" on each corner when comparing with a "regular corner" (see pic). It also, in some cases, causes less splitting of the floor, ceiling and adjacent brushes, and they're easier to texture (again because you only have two faces to texture instead of 3).

For outside corners, it doesn't really make a big difference since the compile tools ignore the outside faces, but many people (including myself) still use them because it makes the brush look cleaner, but it's just a matter of personal taste.

    [Blocked Image: http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5954/corners.png]

And i disagree with 2d-Chris, it doesn't take longer to edit miter corners. Instead of for example using the selection tool to resize or rotate the brushes you use the vertex tool, and texturing is much easier like i mentioned before. You just have to use the right tool for the job

It works perfectly for me, but you need to train your eyes a bit to see the 3D effect.

Basically look at the center of the black bar that divides both images, then cross your eyes as if you wanted to look at your nose. You will start by seeing 4 images, then the two images on the middle will slowly start to overlap. You then have to move your eyes closer or further to your nose (or move your head back and forward slowly) until you see just 3 images, you've to keep doing this until the image on the center is perfectly focused and you'll see the 3D effect (is more like an hologram tbh). I noticed that it also helps if you once move your eyes slightly up and down to see the 3D effect, and while trying to focus the middle image choose a landmark, and focus on it, instead of trying to "look" at the entire image.

Basically what you want to do is move your eyes in such a way that the image from the left overlaps the image from the right.

Warning: if you do it for too long you may get nauseas or eye strain.

Allow me to disagree with you guys, and shed a different light on the subject.

Although their methods are questionable, i agree with the principle behind this video. Art should be free, and everyone should be able to do art, not just those who are rich enough to go to school and study art. In a country like Brazil, where the gap between social classes is huge, i believe that a lot of teenagers that want to do art can't do it because the society they live in doesn't let them and so they must resort to the must rudimentary form of visual art, painting on walls. If you think about it they toke away everything that was "secondary" to art and focused on the most important aspect of it, spreading a message. You may see it just as scratches on a wall, but there is definitely a message behind it, and most of the times it's just a cry for attention, to make society know that they exist and that they have a need to express themselves but that we as a society choose to ignore and marginalize them.

It may not be aesthetically pleasant, but a lot of art nowadays isn't, and artists are getting more and more obnoxious, self centered and hypocritical. I actually enjoyed seeing the faces of all those at the exhibit, they are only capable of enjoying art that conforms with their rules, with what they call "classic art", and paid the price for ignoring these youngsters which choose to express themselves the only way they can.

If you study the origins of graffiti and tagging you will see that it's not about vandalism, it's about freedom. For example I live in a country that had a dictatorship not too long ago, and even today you see walls spread all over the country with messages from the revolutionaries and nonconformists (what must of you will call communists) of that time that fought for our freedom and spread their ideas trough paintings on walls, and in the end their voices where heard, and they turned into a revolution that made our country the democratic republic that it is today. We should do the same with theses kids, we should listen to what they have to say because they are the ones that have to deal every day with the reality of the streets, they feel on their skin the social discrimination that our society created, and if we don't it will only get worst.

About graffiti and tagging polluting our cities, there are actually some non written rules within the graffiti community that say that you shouldn't do graffiti in places of faith and devotion (churches, cemeteries, etc), in people houses without their consent, in memorial places or monuments, and on cars, but since this type of art is all about freedom of speech there are those who ignore these rules.

I think a nice example of how graffiti is more about the message than the vandalism is a new trend called "clean graffiti" or "reverse graffiti" which are drawings made using cleaning products (most of the times its just plain water) on dirty walls. The funny part is that must governments still try to fight this sort of graffiti and usually clean the rest of the wall. You can see this nice documentary about it on youtube:

I think the main problem is the "2", if they would have called it an expansion pack, instead of a sequel, i think almost no one would complain about, just look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, Crysis Warhead, Red Alert 3: Uprising, World in conflict: Soviet Assault, etc etc. L4D2 definitely feels more like an expansion than a new game.

No one is angry that we're getting a sequel. People are angry that they paid $50 - more than any other Valve game over Steam - for an incomplete game with 4 campaigns after Valve told us they'd be adding new characters, weapons, maps and even videos like with TF2. It takes them 6 months to release the SDK, 7 by the time we can actually play custom levels, and they've already told us they're abandoning the game because it wasn't what they'd envisioned (they say they'll carry on supporting it but they absolutely wont make content for one game alongside separate content for its sequel, especially when they've told us they weren't happy with L4D).

It's not that L4D2 doesn't justify a sequel (even though I think there's still too much of the original underneath to call it a new game), it's that L4D1 didn't justify a $50 game in the first place and all the sort of content we were promised was instead being made as a brand new game from the moment L4D was released.

Read the shacknews interview that KFS posted. There will be updates for L4D1 starting next month, which will include updates to the SDK and community maps.

I'm kind of curious about the new AI Director tough:

    Quote

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D’s dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players’ performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

I also loved the amount of gore in the trailer, it seems like there's a new ragdoll system implemented, and you can cut limbs from the infected and they will still keep going

If you haven't read it yet, here is the RPS exclusive preview:

    http://%7boption%7d

Ho and i read some rumors that there might be something else from Valve at E3, if they are also announcing ep3 maybe we will get a new orange box kind of deal (ep3 + L4D2 + something else (CS 2 maybe?))

  • EU Proposal Would Pressure Devs To Make 'Near-Perfect' Game

    • BaRRaKID
    • May 18, 2009 at 8:40 PM

I really hope this proposal gets accepted, I'm tired of developers rushing software releases, and releasing more and more games with critical bugs, that make consumers loose faith in the industry. I strongly disagree with the BSA spokesperson saying that "Digital content is not a tangible good and should not be subject to the same liability rules as toasters", it's absurd, just because it's "digital" doesn't mean it's quality shouldn't be assured, the consumer still pays for it, and he has the right to demand something that at the very least works. And choosing a toaster as an example is rather funny, because if my toaster brakes, since they are so cheap, i wouldn't even send it back to warranty, i would just buy a new one. A game is far more expensive and if it doesn't works, i will probably download a pirated copy instead of buying a new one.

But i think that the big problem here is that if this turns into a law, it would mean that software would stop being classified as a service, and start being classified as good, that means that instead of owning a license to the game, you would actually own the game (yeah in case you didn't know, you don't actually own any of your games), which would also mean that you would've the right to rent, resell, borrow, and private copy the game, among other rights that come with owning a good. And then it all comes down to the same 'ol problem, piracy and DRM systems. If this happens, almost all DRM systems could be considered illegal, since they strip away rights from the consumer, so no more activation limits, hardware locks, and all that other crap.

So you see it's not just about the creativity like they try to make you believe in that article, in reality it's all about the money as usual.
