Paris, France-headquartered Ubisoft said Monday that it is opening a new "full development studio" in Toronto, Ontario, marking the company's first development presence in the province and creating 800 new jobs in the next decade.

Ubisoft called the opening "significant", as the government of Ontario is investing CAD$263 million ($226 million) over ten years. Ubisoft said its own net investment will amount to over half a billion Canadian dollars in the new studio, whose operations will start in late 2009.

"Today's announcement marks a strategic move for Ubisoft as we continue to expand our internal development force," said Yves Guillemot, president and CEO of Ubisoft. "We are in an excellent position to grow and after extensive analysis we are thrilled to have reached an agreement with the government of Ontario to open our new studio in Toronto."

Guillemot called Toronto "one of North America's economic and cultural epicenters," and expressed excitement for the local talent pool.

The studio is already two years in the works, Toronto officials said during an unveiling in the city on Monday.

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat will oversee the new studio. Ubisoft Toronto will work on "triple-A" games, the company said.

"Ontario wants a bigger piece of the action, and it doesn't get much bigger than Ubisoft," said Dalton McGuinty, premier of Ontario. "This is kind of like landing a major Hollywood studio, only the video game industry is growing faster [than movies]."

Part of Ubisoft's attraction to Toronto was the established film production industry in the city. Ubisoft Toronto will play a key role in the convergence of film and games, the publisher said.

"Ubisoft Toronto will contribute to Ubisoft's global plan of extending its brands to complementary platforms and mediums, including books, comics, short films and other products," Ubisoft said.

Mallat said, "Toronto's unique pool of experienced video game and film industry talent will allow us to develop a team with exceptional ability to help us realize our goals for creating brands with universal appeal that extend beyond the world of video games."

The studio is the fourth for Ubisoft in Canada, where Ubisoft employs over 2300 workers.

    "It's about jobs," said McGuinty.

Any other INS alum affected too?

  • Pitching an idea.

How would one (me) go about pitching a serious idea for a game without the idea being stolen?

Would they take me seriously? I have Insurgency on my resume.

Should I approach publishers or developers? Should I approach either or who have already published games in the genre?

Is there any future for someone who only has 'skills' for designing and writing and not necessarily more tangible talent (i.e. modelling, level design, animation, etc.)?

    Tanks!~

It has almost been two years since I got my 20D. I still use it. But I only had an 85mm f/1.8 because it was all that I could afford.

    Since then, I got a 70-200mm f/2.8L, 16-35mm f/2.8L, 580ex flash, and that's about it.

I go to Photojournalism school now (in second year after completing a fast-track program in the summer, first year condensed to six weeks since I had experience). This summer I have good prospects at being an intern (basically just another staff photog) at Canada's largest daily newspaper - the Toronto Star. I've won a student contest, won a $500 student award and first place in another student contest. They are all pretty much national contests/awards.

It's kind of annoying to post pics from flickr, and it's probably less annoying for you to click a link, so here!

Advice to start: Go buy a roll of Ilford HP5 400 film.

Then trust your light meter, because it really does work. I never wanted to trust it... but it's all you've got with film

    Final advice: RTFM.

Just curious about what everyone shoots here... Just between the two giants, Canon and Nikon. If you shoot with something else, post it here.

Personally, I'm more of a Fuji disposable kind of guy. But then Canon comes in a close second with the sheer-awesomeness-sitting-in-my-lady-friend's-car 20D.

The Department of Music at my university has been putting on a small concert each day (I think) in the Convocation Hall. Yesterday I was assigned to shooting it. Playing the acoustic guitar is Peter Stoicheff, an English Professor at the University of Saskatchewan (my uni). He played a mixture of his own composed tunes and some others.

    1. A view between the doors of the Hall.

    2. Tuning between tunes.

    5. Warming up. (Same place, different time as #1, cropped)

    [Blocked Image: http://www.spearin.ca/andrew/dump/IMG_9836.jpg]

All shot in RAW, Manual, with the 20D and 85mm @ f/4.0

PP includes (some) cropped, channel mixer b&w convert (r:50% g:0% b:50%), curves, noise ninja, usm

I was also interviewed on Thursday by my university newspaper's hiring committee for next year's Photography Editor position

    /agree

    Disagree

Some digital camera's have a really nice grain like the nikon d50, and with photoshop you can create the film/analog/non-digital mood.

Pfft. Film is still much more rewarding. If it wasn't so expensive, I would prefer it over digital.

Digital will never be able to achieve the same character that film has.

About competition with Insurgency. Those guys have an incredible team with a crazy art dept. It seems however, they are going for a standard (not to say bad) realism design, where we are going for something quite different, although in the same setting. I imagine they'll be our competition since we have the same setting, but I don't see, thus far, why people couldn't play both, or for that matter, why my project wouldn't "win out" so to speak. But time will tell, and the design doc needs to be tested. One step at a time... and they are many steps ahead of us.

I can't believe I never encountered this project before. I think your perception of INS is a little off from what it really is (which I don't blame you since we don't pitch everything), but what I have always thought about 'realistic gameplay' are firefights.

It's one thing to have iron sights, realistic damage, etc. but that still doesn't make a game (in my view) 'realistic' necessarily. I encounter a lot of people in the INS community who seem to think that having an accurate ballistics physics system is what realism is, but to me it's not about that.

Reading on your website, I kind of find it bizarre that you have pretty much the exact same philosophy as I do when it comes to the gameplay. INS may look good, which is a very big pull factor for people, but the mechanics that we're trying to deliver at the core gameplay are realistic firefights.
