Honestly, I welcome our mostly-phone-like-device overlords. Hate the video, hate the pictures, hate the ringtones, use text messaging a bit but don't like it...

fuck what cell phones have become is pretty much what it comes down to.

There may be options for those with degrees (or equivalent) or professional experience, but I wouldn't plan on it.

If any of you outside the US are interested and have one or both of those qualifications, feel free to contact me directly and I can put out some feelers with our lead (who in turn can discuss things with HR) to see if there are any options available.

It's still safe to assume US residents only, but I think it'd be doing a disservice to not let us at least take a look anyway.

    BUMP

Still LD slots available for any of those interested, including a couple on the project me and Ken are on, and you know you want to work with us. Right? Right.

Can apply directly, or prod me or any of the other GBX guys for more info. I highly recommend checking it out, though.

John Mullins is scary, btw. I've never met him, but the stories I heard from the guys on SOF1/2 were... impressive. I mean, he's a nice guy from everything I've heard, but the stuff he's seen... D:

Wow, I dig this. Looks very nice, albiet monochromatic. Some ideas: the post font could stand to be a point or two larger. I like the rollovers, but you might want to increase the disparity between colors. Disabled links (there sure are a lot of them, too) should point to # so the page doesn't have to reload. Also, please keep using text wherever possible instead of images.

Ah, # was what I was looking for, thanks. Hopefully those won't be there too long anyway.

I definitely plan on leaning mostly on text, save for the project stuff. I'm hoping to use the added space to great success for browsing the portfolio stuff. I'll have to see what I come up with.

same as it's always been, at least since I moved off PHL.

I was pleasantly surprised how well the news ported over, save for the paragraph spacing issues. Hopefully I can be smart enough about the other sections to make it just as easy. Biggest thing I'm trying to wrap my head around is how to split the two sidebars into their own content types using the system I have, and get them to only load on the news page... I might need to teach myself some PHP as well, haha.

    what colors?

they are indeed awfully dark. there's a nice subtlety on my monitor (dell 2407) but even on my 2001fp it looks completely monotone, so I'll have to fiddle a bit yet.

Conforming to w3c is sucking up to The Man.

It really is, but it seems a novel idea to me to actually try to do this right instead of my usual hackjobs.

    Quote from Thrik

It's pretty good for what it's intended to be, but I'd recommend somehow splitting up the columns a bit better. It's kind of hard on the eye to differentiate them quickly at the moment, which could easily be fixed with some well-chosen colour (perhaps lighten the grey for the backgrounds of two of them, or use a vivid colour for headers, etc).

I wonder if just brightening the news post background would help? It just struck me as you said that and I looked at it again I never intended to leave those black.

    - a link to my website

ohnoes! D: I'll be sorting out those links quite a bit more later, don't worry. I just recently shifted to having them only on the news page so I'll be able to cram in quite a few more people without bloating any of the portfolio content when it goes in.

    Quote from ReNo

I rather like it. Not too sure about the right aligned, plain text header though - that looks really boring and basic to me.

I'm a little torn on this, too. It's minimalist, which I like, but it is bland. Not sure if I'm good enough to make a non-suck logo, but now that you mention it I have a couple ideas I might try.

    Check it.

Finally have broken out of my 600px wide shackles and oh is it glorious. This design is even w3c compliant and finally table-free! Pow.

I haven't finalized the colors yet (some are still stolen from lunaran's new design, haha), and old news posts are broken by some new formatting, but how's the direction thus far?

Yeah, in that case didn't it turn out that the 14-year-old kid killed was the one that owned the game, not the kid who killed him?

It completely dropped off the American news radar when that came about.

Really, you should be more concerned with draw calls than your paltry 'triangles' and such

It's pretty impressive how cheap triangles are getting in modern engines... before long triangles are going to be practically free

Another engine that wont run on consoles? I think every id game so far (including it's engine) has gone to consoles.

Well, Doom 3 tech was a nightmare enough on the 360, let alone for D3 on the original Xbox when they called Raven in to help out VV. We got raped CPU-side on Q4 on the 360, but apparently the 360 GPU didn't even crack a sweat. I don't envy Nerve or Z-Axis (who the hell thought that was a good idea, btw?) trying to get QW and Megatexture onto the consoles. I mean, it'll batch well... but that's about it.

That said, I'll give Carmack credit for keeping id in a fairly strong position; without his tech (console-friendly or otherwise) I think they'd be in a lot of trouble. Interested to see how long they carry on independently after he retires, which would be after this game if he sticks to his original plan.

I don't possibly see how you could say that... visually, Doom 3 was a radical departure from Quake 3, which was a radical departure from Quake 2, which was a radical departure from Quake, which was radically different from Doom.

Outside of brown there's not much of a common denominator, and even then Quake 3 was pretty vibrant and Doom 3 leaned toward black instead.

Sure is bad screens, but I wonder where those 20gb of textures are used.Looks VERY low res on some places, like the road compared to the debris on it.

Uniquely texturing everything. Imagine the memory you'd need to put a unique texture on every face in just a HL1 level, not counting the numerous passes on textures today.

I wonder how Sony is going to get out of this - and what the f* did they put in that sequence?

    I imagine it's a combination of this:

    [Blocked Image: http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2006/315/928399_111206_screen047.jpg]

    and this:

    [Blocked Image: http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2006/291/928399_20061019_screen004.jpg]

e-freak, I respect your position, but this to me feels a lot more like the mayor of Las Vegas decrying Rainbow Six: Vegas as detrimental to the image of Las Vegas, where apparently taking the role of a counter-terrorist working to save a Las Vegas under fictional attack by rogue forces is terrible, while the weekly televised multi-murders, serial killers, and pathological crime of CSI is perfectly fine.

In this context, you're a fictional American soldier fighting alongside a fictional British Army against a fictional alien menace invading Europe. The use of a cathedral, real or fictional, shouldn't be considered any differently than in any movie, television show, or other game in with such a place is used as the backdrop.

The precedent people seem to be trying to set with this, the R6:V issues, complaints over GRAW2 from the mayor of Juarez (in which Juarez is embroiled in a fictional rebellious conflict as the player fights alongside Mexican Army soldiers to protect the city and drive out the rebel forces) and Mercenaries (which Hugo Chavez has claimed is anti-Venezuelan propaganda as it features guns-for-hire operating within Venezuela), is that games cannot in any circumstance use a real backdrop for fictional events in any context. Which is a bit troubling.

That said, it is true that movies and television shows generally have to get permission to use interior likenesses, there's probably some legal grey area there.
