  • Innovative use of music in games

Vib Ribbon, Bust-a-Groove and Gitaroo Man are other games where the gameplay is directly derived from the music.

Shadow mentioned things like Dance Dance Revolution and the thousands of other games that followed in his wake. But maybe Audition Online deserves a mention for breaking the mold somewhat - it's also a MMO.

If you could be more specific about what you're looking for it could help. A lot of games use music as a kind of feedback or reward (Ex: Super Mario World's Yoshi), or as en excellent tool for suspence and horror (Silent Hill without the music would suck).

I completely missed this and judging from the lack of coverage on here, so did everyone else? Taylor? Did you know anything about this?

I did, but since it wasn’t the same team I've not really been following it. And to be honest I didn’t like The Room that much after I gained my rather helpless sidekick (though I know it wasn’t intended to be a Silent Hill game originally).

I might be a bit worried it would be too ‘Westernised’ but I’d really like to suppress my cynicalism for now, the original game was claimed to be a Eastern take on the Western horror genre anyway so I can clutch to that for some reassurance.

The Nurse does have a rather impressive pair but, to my mind, were always intended to be sexually attractive with the slight juxtaposition of having no face. I’ll wait until they bust out the jump scares, zombies and machine guns before I start my tirade.

I absolutely loved this and Portal so I don’t want this to sound overly negative. I'll give it 10/10, but then again there's sixteen 100% reviews of Halo 3 so I might have to bump that to 12/10.

A lot of the content is the same: Valve do things by the numbers (I’d be more surprised if I found a lift and it actually worked!), there are no new weapons and only two subtancial additions to the enemy roster. The new set-pieces were absolutely brilliant and had me grinning like a fool at my monitor… But between them both there’s about 8 hours of gameplay.

I know what you’re going to say: “Taylor, you dolt, it’s not a new game,” and that’s fair enough - but it feels like I’ve been waiting an awful long time. Yeah, this is another in-hindsight rant about episodic content. I’ll stop myself.

In my opinion valve could pull a really interesting plot twist from now on. We already know that Gordon is going to rescue something from Aperture Science in EP3, well what if in Portal 2 (if they do make one) you also have to rescue that equipment in a race against Gordon? You could see Gordon, and fight him (gravity gun vs portal gun would be interesting), and you get two games with two different characters, which have both the same objective but work for different factions.I hope they do something like this

I think what Half-Life 2 needs now is Science and Industry!

LACKING feedback? I thought FEAR was one of the best games around in that regard - enemies always died in awesome ways! Fly kicking an enemy in slow motion and sending them flying backwards over a meeting room table, letting off a few rounds of their gun into the ceiling before they skid into an enemy at the far end of it? Doesn't get much better than that IMO Cool effects like arms and heads flying off happened too, but unlike most games that feature them it was used only occasionally, which made it much cooler on the occasions that it did. FEAR wasn't perfect, mostly due to the ridiculous repetition in the environments, but the actual combat was easily some of the best I've come across in an FPS.

I swear you only post once every never to disagree with whatever I just said

But I wasn't talking about the best moments of the original FEAR, I was takling about the movie of the second one. That showed weak looking weapons (aside from the shockwave spawning weirdness) making people output bits of blood mist and falling down.

Basically at no point in the movie did anything make me feel like wincing or making I-felt-that "oooh" sounds at my monitor.

I liked all the little set pieces they had going on, hopefully it’ll try to be a bit more adventurous rather than trying to hit every box in the list of clichés like its predecessor. But I had no dislike to F.E.A.R really, outside of its silly title.

But still, the actual fighting seems to be pretty boring and lack feedback. Unloading bullets from peashooters into enemies for the reward of a small red mist and having them ragdoll afterwards seems a bit rudimentary. The environment seems relatively static with only the odd triangles of glass awaiting the odd stray bullet. The enemies also seemed to be quite stupid and our supposed anti-hero seems to react to bullets in the gut only slightly more realistically than Monkey D. Luffy

Even though I’m one of those annoying people who think "PC Gamer" is some kind of oxymoron, neither of the consoles is really doing anything for me right now - I play my PS3 about the same as I do my 360: never.

I beginning to think I have some kind of factory defect for not getting wet over all these console-based, powersuit-bound, bloom-filled first person shooters. While I don't deny the PS3 has really shot itself in the foot at every opportunity in regards to it's marketing and image. The time released over suckage is still in Sony's favour in regards to the content.

But again, that's because I'm of the [lone] disposition there should be LESS CONSOLE FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS ABOUT GUYS IN POWER SUITS AND MORE DEMON LOLI'S ON ISOMETRIC BOARDS PUNCHING PEOPLE SO HARD THEY COLLAPSE INTO A SINGULARITY AND EXPLODE FOR NO FUCKING REASON.

I've heard of this, but I got the impression it was more of a traversal game than an action game, and found the traversal to be an underwhelming sequence of context sensitive jump animations.

But now it seems it has more of an action slant, and that side does look really awesome.

People at work have been hooked on the demo, though personally I find the idea of instantly dying the moment you walk into an open space rather annoying... And if spawn camping is rampant on our little LAN got knows what it's like on the anonymous internet!

But credit where it's due they've nailed the whole map objectives thing and realised that no matter what objectives, story or motivation you give the players, all 99% of them want to do is kill other people. And most maps seem designed with this mentality in mind.
