Quote from ThrikAnd that right there pretty much sums up why I don't play this kind of game.
To be fair there was absolutely no gear grind 1-79. You frequently find upgrades from kills, all quests end with a vendor who sells you decent gear for little resource, daily quests and zone completion give you tonnes of stuff, and there are periodic vendors who outright sell you full sets. Crafting isn’t really viable for this because it levels much slower than your character and doesn’t really seem worth it except the Legendary weapons... and you’ve got to be borderline insane for all that rigmarole. But these are just the intended ways to get equipment; there’s also the massively overstocked auction house where you can buy a full set of gear for less than it costs to teleport across the map every ten levels. This isn't top of the line gear but certainly enough to faceroll anything you might encounter.
I think my main dispirited sigh at the end-game content was how it’s all completely separated out, meaning you can’t mix and match the different routes together. If you want the PvP set you must play WvW until you have an unfathomable amount of badges. If you want a PvE set you must play through same instance over and over (optimally all three routes once a day). Mystic weapons seem fairly reasonable but things like the Emerald Pendant take over a thousand raw materials including 50 only available from daily achievements.
As far as I’m aware these all have equivalent stats and no unique properties. The PvP set from WvW is exotic level 82 gear with the “solider” prefix and therefore identical to the PvE set from Sorrow’s Embrace that is generated the same way. I guess you could hodgepodge a set together from these different avenues that way and remodel it so you don’t look like a clown but it all seems a bit messy either way.
As an aside, our group also decided to play Left 4 Dead 2 again last night. We were basically playing MOBA's before this but there’s a, err, skill gap that has created some occasional passive aggressiveness.
