  • Xbox 360 price drops announced...

Saw the price drop e-mails last week at GameStop, I wasn't terribly surprised. This after MS drops the HD-DVD player price and offers 5 HD-DVDs, it'll be an interesting format battle. My money is still on HD-DVD because of the porn factor. Just like beta and VHS, it'll eventually happen. Sure Blu-ray is a better format, but Sony is greedy and it'll get the better of them again.

360 does have the better set of titles this year, I won't be buying a PS3 any time soon.

I'd really like to see the tools and what kind of system requirements this thing will need to run. Though I must give a few cheers to Carmack to sticking with openGL, his innovations using that system amaze me of it's potential capabilities.

I'm also happy he's developing it for Mac

    Quote from DD

You should hand the domain over to Mikey or Mojo so they can have it forward here.

I offered it to Mike, he didn't take me up on the offer a while ago. I can point it to his host, but his host might take him offline for the sheer amount of spam traffic going to that domain.

The major problem is the fact the domain is still everywhere in text files of old counter-strike maps and other web sites, so spam bots and even the SoBig worm still have it on their hit list. Mapcore.net isn't there yet and neither is the .org. I was going to register the .org a few months back to put up the old site for historical sake, but I decided not to bother and I'm stuck with the .com until April of next year.

Oh yeah, .com's are getting more expensive now so .net/org is the place to be!

    Mapcore.com is popular!

A few days ago I attached mapcore.com to my account at textdrive. Yesterday I received an emergency e-mail about the server crashes, guess what was the cause.

According to the statistics, in a 48 hour period approxomately 1,050,263 spam e-mails arrived at the server. This effectivly killed the mail queue and crashed everything. After a restart, in less than 24 hours about 950,041 spam e-mails passed into the mail queue, crashing the server again. My host informs me the domain's MX records (the information about where to deliver mail for a domain) have been changed to stop e-mail entirely.

So it's time to give a silent goodbye to mapcore.com because it's going on a long vacation.... forever. I'm really not going to miss it now, but I sure wish things could have been better for the domain since I had some plans already in the works.

Well so much for doing a rewrite, looks like Mojo and Mikey got time to re-do the site and fix a few things.

I will be starting a beta of the forum app over this weekend (12/16/05) since I just upgraded my hosting account to allow for more domains, mainly the mapcore.com domain so I can host it while it's being developed.

I will start with the basics of a forum system with the minimal amount of features needed, from there I will take your suggestions for features to add to the system. The spotlight system will be one of my first priorities, so any suggestions you have on making this more streamlined would be really helpful. Maybe a checkbox in your post to allow moderators to review it for a spotlight showing? Let me know, I'm all ears!

I spoke with Mike before about revamping the site and personally rewriting the forums because I need the portfolio work. Only reason I haven't gotten anything started is because of my part-time contract and the fact I am moving at the end of the year, so it won't be until after the new year that I can have anything started for the site.

Oh yeah, some show of maturity would probably help this community a ton in terms of public opinion. A little site reorganization helps, but nicer, more helpful people goes a longer way. Even if you cannot help, being more mature is helpful.

My hats off to Kedhrin for posting and shame on the EOT crew destroying the thread.

Agreed, I'm looking to write a better version of this board. Simplified, easy to use and useful for the community. The Spotlight section has been on my mind and I've had some thoughts about where to incorporate this feature.

Spotlight Section at the top on the forum frontpage, sort of an announcements section, but with images. I'd be dropping the news stuff in favor of a Jobs category for easier maintainence. I would almost be inclined to make a separate jobs app after this one for industry jobs, but some sites already have this covered, might be a moot point.

    What do you think?

Thanks for all the replies, I'm not looking to obliterate the current board, just make a simplified one with just enough features to make the community interactive and helpful. Having a featured works section at the top of the board has crossed my mind and I wouldn't be against adding that in to the system as well.

The private messaging system is a little tricky in proposition and I brought up the use of gravatars instead of personally hosted avatars. Gravatars were invented for the blogging masses as a means to have an avatar anywhere you commented on a post. Avatars are merely an optional accessory, as with any of the extra features of a traditional board. I'd like everyones opinion on the use of gravatars versus a hosted option, not just because it's less for me to code, but it also takes a little burden off the server to serve up that extra content. If you're curious, check out the Gravatar site at http://www.gravatar.com/ to see for yourself.

Again, thank you for all the responses and commentary, keep posting some more suggestions and requests.

    Greetings,

I wanted to make this post directly to the mapcore people at large to get your opinions and suggestions about forum software usage habits.

The topic of this post is to ask you what features of a forum do you value most? (Post/Reply Topic, Polls, Private Messaging, Calendar, Gallery, Emoticons)

Would you use a forum if it only had sections with topics and replies? (This means no private messaging, galleries, calendar, polls) Don't worry, there would be avatar/signature support.

Please, only constructive criticism and direct answers with some reasoning behind them because I'd like as much information as possible.

Thanks agan for your replies, I look forward to reading them.
