I don't think any MGS has had a bad intro, but MGS2's was pretty killer. Being my first PS2-generation game I was blown away by how awesome that whole ship sequence looked, truly ground-breaking visuals at the time. MGS3's was brilliant too with the HALO jump and smashing through the trees, ending up in a quiet, isolated jungle — set the feel up so nicely.

Half-Life's train ride was iconic IMO. It so beautifully communicated everything Black Mesa was all about and how full of life it was, while also emphasising just how deep inside you were going. On top of that it drew you into a false sense of security and made the carnage that ensued later and ripped the place apart much more effecting.
By modern standards it's nothing special, but I distinctly remember sitting there back in 1998 and thinking "this is fucking cool", and I don't think I was alone. I hadn't ever encountered anything truly like that before, in most if not all games you were pretty much thrown into the action immediately.

LMAO
Either Kojima is literally nuts or he has the best marketing guy ever.

What is annoying is that from all the people who live in my town, only 20% or so actually do something (either work, shop or study), the other 80% just sits around watching TV all day apparently.
Sounds just like the UK???
I'm seriously thinking of getting SimCity 4 with Rush Hour and waiting until the next sequel of this. It seems like they have a good foundation for a few generation of SimCity but there are far too many problems for it to be considered ready. All these simulation issues are... crazy.

SimCity 2014 announced already. Check out the awesome new features coming up.

Looking forward to getting Absolution. I'm a massive stealth game fan, and am currently working through Dishonored right after finishing Deus Ex: HR. I'm pretty much in gaming nirvana right now, only a new MGS coming out this year would complete the perfection.

I think a lot of the criticism about donations stems from the fact that this video series got an unprecedented level of funding. I've had discussions elsewhere about how Kickstarter itself could handle this phenomenon as it's sure to happen again.
More transparency concerning how excess funds are used will probably help calm people's fears that projects attaining huge funds will spend most of the money recklessly or on personal stuff — something which can and has happened already with numerous Kickstarter projects, including ironically enough a 'male tropes in video games' Kickstarter that was set up to to counter/mock Anita's project. Scams are already starting to become a big thing on Kickstarter and I suspect a lot of people began thinking Anita was going that way considering it took quite a lot of time for the first video to come out and the results (so far) are questionable.
On top of that, the huge amount of funding the videos got and hype that went along with it has probably raised peoples' expectations to unrealistic levels, so no matter what she puts out it's going to disappoint. The fact that this video has been rabidly posted all over the internet by Anita's fans probably hasn't helped, as people often instinctively reject things that're making lots of headlines (like people who think they're too cool for memes).
In my case I think my expectations were relatively tame and I was still left a little wanting by the first video, but I'm receptive to the rest of the series being better. And I'd rather not spend too much time going into specific reasons I didn't enjoy the video because that's kind of like asking someone to explain why they don't like a certain TV show or documentary. Some draw you in and hook you, some don't. For me, Anita's didn't.
But I do respect her message and cause, and while she might not be the best spokesperson for it it's great to see that people are actually taking time to discuss this topic in detail. In that sense she's succeeded wonderfully.

Jetsetlemming the whole point of Anita's videos is to promote discussion about sexism, depictions of women in games, etc. And if you read through this thread (particularly pages three and four) you'll find some well-considered contributions to the discussion. I'm not sure why you're having a go at people for trying to have a serious, constructive chat about the topic rather than listing issues with the video.
I will admit that I personally found the video lacking and didn't do justice to a big topic, something I found disappointing considering the excellent backing it had. But the subject as a whole is very important and I'm delighted to see the video has at least sparked off good conversation about it in many forums and sites across the web, including this one (excluding retarded comments like d3's).

What other good simulation games have there been during the past 10 years? Other than Tropico I can't think of any other particularly worthwhile ones, the millions of hours I'd spend with things like Theme Park, RollerCoaster Tycoon, SimCity, etc are long gone.
The Sims is about as close as I've gotten to a fun experience, others seem too focused on being ultra-realistic or designed for old men and just aren't very enjoyable.I'm not saying the genre is actually dead, but it feels so under-loved that when a big-budget game like SimCity comes out it makes you realise how good this genre could be (retarded technical issues aside). There're virtually no well-known or mainstream simulation games nowadays and that kind of sucks. It seems like most simulations nowadays are made for old men who don't care about a remotely polished experience.

Reading this is a bit disconcerting:

I really hope they figure this shit out because it'll be tragic if such a great-looking game is buried beneath issues that just shouldn't be there and kills off the simulation genre for good.

lmao I'm glad I'm not the only one who does retarded things in games before going to bed.
Many a good killing spree in Deus Ex...From the looks of things plus feedback I'm hearing the small city size really is a problem, like I thought. I'm definitely going to wait for a large city patch/expansion before buying as I know it'll frustrate me.
I kind of get the impression that the multiple-city thing is better if you run the whole region yourself. That's what was often shown in the pre-release videos and splitting your city into areas in a region makes much more sense to me than having different people doing totally their own thing yet still affecting your city. I bet doing that is no more efficient or fast than regular multiplayer from the sound of how they've done the networking, though.
I don't think I've ever sat there while playing an older simulation game and thought "Man I wish there was someone else in my world fucking around with shit at the same time as me". Seems like they've forced something (and the appropriate requirements) on us that few people were actually asking for.

Really enjoying Dishonored so far. Only got to taking out the Overseer dude (first proper mission) but the game has a great feel about it.
It's interesting how many other games this one evokes when I play it. As I proceed I keep getting flashes of Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, Fable, and BioShock. But it does it all so well I don't care where the inspiration came from.

My only problem so far is that if I ever end up in a combat situation I get seriously assholed. I just can't seem to deal with more than a couple of dudes without burning through my entire stock of health. I guess this is to encourage stealth though, and I imagine I'll become more powerful with more runes.

When the straight white men of MapCore unite to talk about how sexism / homophobia / racism isn't real and isn't worth talking about, especially in the game industry, you're all sending a message to other MapCore community members -- don't post, don't participate, your feelings aren't valid.
I think that's okay in EOT because that's the special space for it; I avoid EOT and I'm fine with it.
But if you do it out here, in public, keep in mind that people are going to see this, and you're making someone like me feel less welcome here. What, so I'm going to have to start avoiding the "Gaming Discussion" forums too? I wonder how the women of MapCore feel?
I'm not saying "censor" your sexist opinions; feel as sexist as you want. But just know that there's a chilling effect on others you're intimidating with that attitude. A consequence. And really, you end up looking tactless.
Don't worry, no one is going to speak-up and complain because they feel intimidated. They'll just leave.
I don't think many if any people in this thread are saying sexism isn't a problem. The criticism is more based around the video in the OP not being very good and a waste of lots of money that could have give towards more meaningful and effective causes.
If you're saying we're not allowed to express any negative opinions about the video because it's about sexism and we're horrible mysogonistic pigs for daring to say as such, I'm not sure how that's any better than the intimidation you allude to.

I just don't get it. The video is dry; she lacks enthusiasm so much you have to wonder if she did it all in an afternoon just to get it of the way. I'm so bored watching it I have to keep skipping forward.
Every bit I've watched has just been a load of facts which feel like they came straight off Wikipedia, with virtually no compelling analysis that makes me feel like I'm gaining anything at all from watching it.
I'm guessing a lot of the $160,000 budget she got for this will be spent on another things. There might be another 10 episodes or so, but if they're more of this...
I see all the feminists and white knights out there are loving it. Kind of preaching to the choir though, no? That's like making a series about how awesome MapCore is and asking us what we think.
