This is going to be one of those things that polarises people. One half will love it, the other will never use an iPhone again, lol.

I personally think the design ideas are great and it's the first time the actual functional side of the design has been properly overhauled in years. The aesthetic side definitely needs some work, I'm not sure why they feel the need to put such garish colours in at times. I know it's to make a statement, but it just doesn't look that great. Mainly it's the app icons I'm talking about, some of them like the Safari one look legitimately amateur.

Well I don't know about 60 FPS, I can deal with 30 FPS. But they should be able to maintain 1080p now because the GPUs are more advanced. I know that if you go back some years, the different in FPS between 720p and 1080p was quite significant; however, now you can flick between those resolutions on PCs and there's almost no difference. I assume it's because the GPUs have much more memory.

I think the manufacturers should mandate 1080p. If that means the general level of graphics can't be pushed quite as far as it could otherwise, I'm OK with that. Even on my nowhere-near-as-big-as-HP's 42-inch TV there's a very visible difference in clarity between 720p and 1080p. That matters to me a lot more than some extra shader effects and poly detail.

That's a point. I read that Sony is pushing developers to maintain 1080p and 60 FPS. I hope it happens because 720p doesn't look so hot when you have jaggies, and the sub-720p resolutions that some current-gen games cheat by using look downright awful.

Honestly, I'd rather have some things scaled back if it means compromising 1080p. I know it was probably necessary with the current generation to squeeze satisfactory graphics out of the GPUs, but not any more.

I don't think I've ever actually played a console F2P game. It's good to know that F2P games will be truly F2P though.

I hope it's good but I'm remaining very cautious because Zak Snyder isn't directing, and instead it's some no-name who's got like no real experience.

Normally I wouldn't put quite so much weight on a director's contribution, but Snyder has such a unique approach that IMO he was largely responsible for 300 being as good as it was. If it were any other director it'd have just been a mess of loosely-tied-together action sequences.

The trailer is enjoyable though, and I do love the god king character so good to see him getting plenty of action.

Yeah, you'll need PS+ to access the online portion of PS4 multiplayer games.

While I was a little surprised initially, I'm OK with it. Multiplayer on the PS3 might have been free but it was also a fairly disjointed and laggy experience. it looks like Sony has been putting serious investment into the PS4's online infrastructure: loads of social features, instant sharing of gameplay videos, dedicated servers, etc. I'm guessing money will be needed to support these single-player/multiplayer crossover games that look like they're going to become a big thing next gen too.

In short, I think we're going to get extra value for money that justifies the cost. The PS3 online experience fell way behind Microsoft's once MS started introducing the new versions of the OS, probably because MS had so much support from subscriptions to keep improving it.

This is the kind of arrogance that sinks console companies (or divisions).

Oh, haha. I think it reminds me of PlanetSide more than anything, except with some serious-ass storytelling going on. It's funny that I've never been interested in such story-based multiplayer shooters before but now I can't wait for this and The Division. Especially this, though. God this sci-fi setting looks nice.

Wasn't the main point of the colours in Mirror's Edge to indicate areas you can climb, or at least which direction you should go? I'll be surprised if they're not still doing that, perhaps just more focused now.

That looks incredible but the gameplay video looked exactly like BF3. Was it running on lower settings or something?

I'm a bit underwhelmed by how similar this is to BF3, I was hoping for something more dramatic like BF2142 — it was very similar to BF2 but the new setting made it sweet. That said, return of the commander role is obviously a great thing and I hope the squad/teamplay mechanics in general have been improved because that's what makes Battlefield special.

The bit in the video where they were in the huge-ass building with curtains blowing in wind and a helicopter firing in was awesome. Interesting layouts like that and bigger maps will make me very happy.

With all the women in games discussion right now, I wonder why the depict the Sniper always and only in Bikini-Tops...

Also - children as soldiers seems to be a very touchy subject - I wonder how they tackle this. Will they be active opponents or just stand-ins in cutscenes or just some flackback you get?

Kojima said some time ago that he's attempting to tackle some particularly sensitive themes in this one, he definitely mentioned race as one of them. MGS has always been about trying to teach about real-world issues but it definitely looks like he's planning on making this one shock. Presumably there'll be parallels to the bombs that are put in kids' sewed-up bodies in Afghanistan, etc.

OK I've just returned from sitting in a cold bath for a while to get over that trailer. Holy fuck, I so can't wait for this. I kind of feel like I've missed out on some story though, am I meant to know who skull face is? And when did Big Boss come across Metal Gear, presumably that happened between MGS3 and this?

I have to admit that I'm warming to Kiefer. Now that I've heard him speak more it's clear that he's intentionally making his voice a bit gruffer and he's using a slightly adjusted accent to sound a bit more like classic Snake.

Maybe, I dunno, play with friends then?

A good idea in theory, but in reality I end up doing my gaming at relatively unsocial hours or I like to play games my friends aren't into so much. I guess if everyone on MapCore adds each other it could be cool though.

Looks like a lot of next-gen games are integrating online play very tightly into the core experience while still remaining story-based. A proper fusion of single-player and multiplayer. I'm actually excited about this even though the concept has never really appealed to me in the past. I guess I'd never seen it done well, whereas stuff like The Division, Destiny, and Titanfall look genuinely sweet.

This is going to have significant online architecture requirements I imagine, so that'll be where the subscription cost goes. Not to mention all of this awesome social and video sharing stuff. I can get behind that.
