Yeah, I'm with Mazy. I don't really see Christmas as a time for receiving significant gifts anymore, and just enjoy the family/atmosphere/food. Anything I need I've already bought myself. ![]()

Don't forget to account for widescreen.

Is the menu itself normally that far to the right? Seems a bit unplaced there.

Heh, I mean just look at that last screenshot. What a fucking amazing engine.

It's such a generally detailed engine/game you kind of don't notice just how much detail there is, until you break it down in shots like that.

Super Mario Galaxy is one of the finest games ever created for sure, but I have trouble imagining most games on the Wii meeting its standard. The main problem is the hardware; although Galaxy is very special with its mechanics, it only gets away with it because the unique planet theme means there's no significant background geometry to render.
For casual gamers and kids the Wii will of course be magnificent, because let's make no mistake we're only just past the first year of the console; it took the 360 at least this long to get some momentum, and the same goes/will go for the PS3. There'll be many very fun games for those audiences, including Nintendo's usual top-class first-party games such as Smash Bros and Mario Kart.
The hardware 'cap' is very worrying though, and kind of restrains the console from really hitting its prime. While with the 360 and PS3 developers are continuously improving and pushing more beauty out, with the Wii they're pretty much using GameCube techniques that're very mature and aren't really going to look much better, or more complex (physics, etc). We won't see the evolution like on the last generation where, say, Metal Gear Solid 3 looked so much more advanced than Metal Gear Solid 2 despite being on identical hardware.
With that said, the cheapness of the console may mean Nintendo can be first to the punch with the next generation and go back to being competitive with hardware and having an improved iteration of the Wiimote concept. Because for sure, the Wiimote is a winner on all fronts in my opinion and if combined with 360/PS3 hardware it could be something amazing.
I doubt Nintendo would have had success pushing the fairly risky Wiimote concept with a more expensive console, though. They'd probably have sank for good.
I personally have no regrets about my Wii. Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy are amazing, and alone make me feel my money was worthwhile. Future Nintendo games that I'll love will be out soon, and there may even be a second Zelda (the Wii hasn't had a native one, really) before the end of the Wii's life. I pretty much just buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games -- always have.

I think cinema overheads contribute to it. I know some guys in a smaller town not too far away and they think the price we pay for the cinema is outrageous. Then I point out they have of those old 50s cinemas on the corner of the street that's quite small and shabby, while we have a 12-screen multiplex that's really fancy and spacious. Must cost a lot more to run.

Even more funny is that my glorious town Mansfield has a pretty shit reputation from the mining days, so all the other towns in the county look down on it and openly make insulting 'jokes' about it (especially at work) despite it being much bigger, better, and having more facilities than them all.

(I bet D3adlode is one of them.)

Yeah. The reason I suggested Monkey Island stuff is they have quite a lot of architecture and stuff which is pretty pleasant on the eyes and non-Crysis, but still fits into the tropical feel. It'd be a good stepping stone between a seriously non-Crysis look and the classic Crysis look.

Not sure how well it'd cope with full-blown urban type stuff, though. The engine can handle a lot of polies, but how many of those aren't generated on the fly with the foliage painters and stuff? Can you stick really high-poly buildings and architecture in there and it not look like ass?

It's about $12 here, no idea what that is in Euros. Sounds like you get 'em cheap, though. Is the cinema old/small screens/unkempt or something?

Maybe you could just do part of the island?
There was a project ages ago to make part of Plunder Island (pictured above) as a UT2004 map, where basically you were kept to a fairly linear area (eg: a single path through forest) but the illusion of being on the full island and being able to go all over it.
Alternatively, you could make it so you can see the more detailed parts of the island (eg: the town in the island pictured above) but not actually go into them, unless you really want to produce all that custom content.
It'd be an epic accomplishment, but it'd be damned fun. Monkey Island itself would probably be the easiest as it's mostly vegetation, beach, cliffs, etc.
It'd really get your name out there anyway, which is good for a budding pro.
I reckon you'd get some amazing publicity from it. -
I think one problem Crysis mappers are always going to face is making something that stands out. After all, I look at those screenshots above and have a hard time working out whether or not it's just something from the original game (Though that at least says your quality standard is good!).
I think an awesome project to embark upon would be to try and model one of the many Monkey Island islands, ideally one of one of those in the first three games (people prefer them). I'm betting if you did a really good job you could easily get Dugg, as well as posted about by the many gaming blogs/sites out there such as Joystiq and Destructoid (especially ones like MixnMojo).
It'd also be quite challenging because they all have some pretty specific structures, rather than just being nothing but foliage and hills with some huts like most Crysis maps will be.

Just something to consider for a Crysis mapper who's familiar with the Monkey Island series and wouldn't mind some heavy publicity, anyway.

Have you forwarded this thread to the web host Mojo? Going off the link Sindwiller posted, this is only something they can fix as it's a server-level security breach.
-
Yeah, if we're going to just have comments like "X is dull and shit" then the thread isn't staying open, and those who've done it can take this as a hint to not do that in future. Bear in mind that people who worked on the games you're freely slagging off visit MapCore.

Type used for branding, film, television, games, etc, is typically produced specifically for that purpose by a typographer or logo designer. These may often be based on existing fonts, but generally aren't literally just an existing font used as is.
The best you can probably hope for is a font someone's created based upon the brand (eg: Spiderman font, PlayStation font, etc), or to find a similar font yourself that can be edited with little trouble. It looks like a very basic sans-serif font so that shouldn't be very difficult.
You may find this amazing tool useful for finding the font the Se7en type was based on. The more letters you have the better, but it might be enough. Be sure to bookmark this as it's generally useful.
You will be surprised about how accurate it can be if you have plenty of characters to work with.Oh, and you have done the obvious, right?

Could eventually end up the case, though I doubt it'll be the next generation.
The concept does seem like a natural evolution of games at some point. I've noticed that a lot of people who're new to games, and even myself sometimes, move their head as if it'll let them see further round a corner in a game. I know for a fact some friends do this too when playing -- it's just the natural thing to do.

Cool article.
It's really weird and sad that Ron Gilbert has never had a successful pitch, which in itself speaks pretty badly of the way things are currently done seeing as he was responsible for some incredibly successful and masterful games. Tim Schafer came from the same background as Gilbert and is going pretty well, and has demonstrated that the things he did well in 1990 apply really well to today's games too. I hope Gilbert gets the chance to do the same.

Editing the theme isn't a problem for Mojo or (shortly) myself. Not every suggestion from a couple of people is going to be implemented, though. If such a small number of people could influence changes then we'd still have the names and avatars on the right.

If more people agree that the numbers should be moved I guess there's no choice, but I for one like the current arrangement as it's more uniform and neat.
Anyone who hasn't said so yet, share which you prefer.

I prefer it how it is now.

To be honest, a mirrored skin on Duke is no big deal. Don't forget that Duke is an FPS, and many FPS games including the champion superb game Half-Life 2 don't even have a main player model.
Duke really does need to keep working out, though. He looks nowhere near as bulky as he used to.

I think I've managed to hack up that functionality for you by messing around with the advanced search URL (which is what 'View New Posts' really is).
Ordinarily advanced search doesn't let you search for nothing (ie: just display everything), but the 'View New Posts' link adds a special exception that allows this. So, you do an advanced search that has every forum highlighted except EoT, copy the 'fid=X' stuff (forum ID), and then add the special bit that the 'View New Posts' link adds.
You end up with this URL:
Bookmark that and let me know how it works. Since EoT is really shit we could then just have a 'New Posts (without EoT' button or something.

God, what do you buy??
Even a foot-long Subway is only about $9 here, and I usually settle for something smaller from the supermarket. I guess a straight conversion isn't very good though as the pound is quite strong at the moment relative to the dollar.
