  • I tore apart "Zelda: Wind-Waker" on polycount

Just read the thread, an excellent thread. I was pretty impressed by how they did the whole sea/tessellation/scrolling texture thing.

Wind Waker really was an absolute wonder of design. When it came out I was totally bowled over by how good it looked, even down to things like having (what looked like) depth of field and shit like that. It was just beautiful from start to finish and an absolute masterclass in sophisticated game production.

Haha. Someone on another forum was going on about tonsil stones (fucking disgusting) and it turned into a very big discussion where it turns out loads of people have them. So I thought I'd sicken things up a bit by posting that. If you've ever actually seen one you'll understand.

I'm sure many of us fondly remember Broken Sword. In the 90s the series' first two iterations were amongst the true classic adventure games alongside Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc. Unfortunately in the 2000s a misguided revival was attempted in 3D which didn't go so well, but the originals are fantastic. Definitely in my top 10 of all time.

Now there's an opportunity to have a faithful sequel to those originals, with the original designers, art style, voice cast, animators from all sorts of well-known studios, etc. Basically it has the potential to be the perfect sequel that we never got, much like if suddenly we had the opportunity to get a new Monkey Island sequel in the original style with the original team (omg).

Look at all this shit you get:

In short, I think we can conclude: BACK THIS SHIT OR BE BANNED, MOTHER ****ERS!!!!!

It doesn't look next gen but it looks good, that's for sure.

I dunno, this looks a bit much for the 360 and PS3 to me. They could be PC shots, but the GTA series has never treated that platform particularly well and it's going to be a bit annoying for people if the final game comes out and it's not a scratch on the media.

Not that I don't want this to be some magnificent technical feat that'll live every bit up to the shots, of course.

I reworked the weapon I made shaving several thousand triangles off of it, created additional LOD models, remapped the U/V and smoothing groups for greater efficiency and texel density, reworked the texture, eliminated the redundant styles, added a self-illum mask to the 'stickies,' modded the stock particle effects for it, and created two small little promo scenes in Source Film Maker, which I didn't know how to do before.[Blocked Image: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9300049/FINA…promo_sheet.png]

    o gad.

Is it me or this looking quite next-gen? Considering that there's been no announcement of a release date or platforms, I'm kind of thinking this might be an early title for the next wave of consoles.

Salaries are kind of a hard thing to look at in such an international way because what your money gets you varies significantly between territories. I'm paid pretty well in the UK but I know the amount in USD wouldn't impress many Americans. If I were to move over there I could command a much higher USD salary but from what I've seen I wouldn't actually be able to buy that much more with it over there because shit is priced differently.

Kind of like how I could get a huge salary boost simply by working in London, yet I'd be paying so much more for everything else it'd get me no net benefit whatsoever.
