August statt. Noch in Leipzig.

I quickly translated the german news, so our international readers can get the point.

The games convention, europes biggest convention about video and computer games, will take place in cologne in 2009. This was reported by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" this wednesday. The article said that the most important developers in germany came to the point, that they won't continue their contracts with Leipzig after 2008. Instead this happening should be located in cologne, the current location of the leading german publisher Electronic arts. Munich and Frankurt, which showed a big interest at the convention, didn't score (comparing to Cologne). The reasons for the relocation can besummed as a bad train/car/plane connection of Leipzig to other regions/countries and a limited area that gets covered by Leipzig. The contract partners of the "GC", "Leipziger Messer" and "Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungselektronik" (Association of Interactive Electronical Entertainment), didn't want to confirm this decision. Further discussion are being held and an official statement is expected for the end of february.

It's unclear if the name "games convention", that is owned by "Leipziger Messer", can be adapted by Cologne. Till today the owners are not willing to sell it. A temporary license for 3 years and 450.000 euro fee are in discussion, which seems to be too less for the "Leipziger Messer". The development of this trademark has a cost 6.000.000 Euro overall. The games convention from 2007, that attracted over 185.000 visitors, takes place on 20th to 24th august this year. Still in Leizpig

It really would be a shame. As soon as something is succesfull in the east of germany it gets stolen by the west...

The bad traffic connection is a lie. Leipzig has one of the biggest train stations in europe and plenty of ICE connections to the rest of Europe. It's close to the highway, has a decent airport and can be reached from Berlin within short time. Also Leipzig is a much nicer city then Cologne.

Yea, I would also feel sad for Leipzig...aren't there enough conventions in Cologne and Frankfurt alone already? It would be a bigger loss for Leipzig/the east of Germany than a gain for Cologne I'm afraid.

LIES!!! Cologne > Leipzig! just to prove this compare dod_leizpig and dod_kolsch...

oh and if you read again: EA = Cologne; EA = "Der Führer" of games. Since RTL will be located next to the "new" games convention the TV interest might be even bigger. Game related TV stations such as Giga and ESL TV get easier access too. Of course the east should benefit, but since the reunion is years ago now, there should be a bit more realistic view: a lot of people of the east leave the area. Even you left it! So why should the games convention stay there when even you quit!?!

Because it would give me one more chance each year to visit my family that lives close to Leipzig. On a more serious sidenote the GC is important for the east _because_ of the mentioned reasons like people leaving the region etc. The east thins more and more out. Thats a catastrophe. And if there were decent jobs or game developers i would have stayed there.

Also Leipzig is a much nicer city as mentioned before. Cologne has the cathedral, the rest looks like crap thanks to the world war. Leipzig is a center of culture (Bach, Goethe, Thomaner etc.). Cologne is a center of silly carneval tradition that isnt even funny and only people from cologne can laugh about. Ok enough of city bashing
