(Media Studies) Does television affect children's behavior?

Of course it does, it's kind of a dumb question but here we go.

Television has always influenced us, mostly during our childhood, when our personality is being developed. I was given a lot of toys just because I loved TV shows (japanese TV shows like Kamen Rider). Those shows also modeled most of my personality, because of their strong messages about peace and friendship. I'm not sure about the kids these days... these recent animes/tv shows are just commercial crap without any message or cultural value at all. At least in my opinion.

I would also take anything the TV hosts said for granted. If they had said "experiment all kinds of drugs and don't let your parents know!" I would have done it back then. Why are they more trustworthy than your parents ? Simply because they bring you entertaining cartoons instead of getting mad at you when you bring bad marks home.

The government should give special atention to TV programs aimed at children, since those TV programs are influencing the coming generations. I'm not saying the government should blatantly censor these tv shows, but cut some of the crap out when they cross the line.

If I recall correctly you posted some pics of yourself wearing some anime outfit so yeah, TV DOES affect people's behavior

the only program on tv that has affected me was mtv pimp my ride with the american rapper X-to-theZibit.

I begun instantly collecting money to customize cars that was sold on blocket.se in very poor condition. I have been stuck with this, restoring cars (changing accessories, chroming, trimmin' rimmin, - whatever it's spinnin') is now my biggest issue, that got hold on me, you know what i'm sayin.?

well.. yeah.

everything you see around you changes the way you look at things from the day you are born. of course, this is a relatively loose statement but yeah.. think about mtv and what people listen these days. think about movies and their standard hero's and badguys. the tv helps setting alot of social standards (what we think is cool music, what we wear and how we look at certain things) and since lots of people watch alot of tv, i think its safe to say television takes a good share in influencing our behavior.

I work with children aged 6 weeks to 12 years old, and the answer is a resounding yes. There are many children these days who are raised by their TV's instead of having toys and playing outside they are stuck in front of a TV, causing childhood obesity and short attention spans, due to commercial breaks, their attention is broken from what they were watching.

Children will always role-play (not D&D though ) from a young age, regardless of TV, but children who regularly watch tv will enact their favorite characters such as Spiderman, Transformers, Batman, TMNT and the girl shows like My little Pony and care bears etc.

They also see characters who are rude and violent towards parents, parents who are rude and violent towards their children, and so much more, kids from a very young age are more and more sexual due to TV and music. Some parents are also very slack with what they allow their children to watch, such as children in grade 1 and 2 (7-8 years old) watching movies or shows that are not suitable, and their behaviour will be affected accordingly.

If a child constantly sees violence they will be violent

swearing, rude, destructive, sexual.. a child sees these, a child will be these.

A child is a sponge, and soaks up everything it sees and hears from a very young age.

I'm not saying all TV is bad. Some is educational, but all in all, yes, tv affects children's behaviour

You should be able to get an A+ by simply writing "Yes." on the paper, I mean, come on...

I still remember watching Sesame Street and Big Bird telling me to look both ways when crossing the street, and I do.

when I count i always go:

VUUN a-TWOO TREE VOUR! VIVE! a-ZIX!

and i wake up each day and say:

"todays number is 5, and the letter is C!"

obviously the number would vary, and the letter

IMHO - as long as kids are "balanced" - e.g. good diet, has interaction with other children on a regular basis, having healthy amounts of exercise - kids who are sometimes exposed unsuitable media on TV is less likely to "stick" and influence their development.

There is also a huge differance between 1 hour a day watching TV and 6 hours a day.
