I haven't played gears but from the pics all i can tell is that they really do shine/bloom/blur like hell... so you're not alone.

but am I the only one that thinks all UT3 engine games look the same?
I could say the same of Source, actually. In fact, you have even less variation in Source, since you only see the typical radiosity filled, diffuse lighted levels with poor details and architecture.

It's obviously all about the art direction.
TF2 looks nothing like Episode Two, and Portal is again markedly different in looks. All three are on the same build of the same engine -- it's the art that differentiates them.
As Peris said, exactly the same is true of Unreal Engine 3. Yes, Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 do look quite alike, but they are both from Epic. If you look at BioShock and Mass Effect, they quite clearly have their own unique look that's grounded in good art direction.
Same goes for most of the other UE3 titles floating around.
I'd say UE3 has greater capacity for allowing artists to realise their visions as there's simply more technology there to use, which allows more elaborate lighting (of course if it isn't used creatively it's a waste of time) and very complex environmental detail.
Again though, not much good if not many people like playing the available UE3 games online. I certainly don't.

Hehe. Well I basically don't care about that. I have an idea, and I want to realize it as easy, as fast and as nearest to my initial thought as possible. Although I don't get to finish something, as I usually get pissed because of the engine or loose the motivation or something else *sigh*

That's the reason I want to work with the Unreal engine for a bit.
I've only ever used Source, and while it is good, I tend to be put off making my own stuff due to the complex nature of compiling a model for Source. The Unreal engine seems a lot easier to get your models in-game, and the realtime lighting viewer is a definite bonus

It may be easyer but you will most likely want normalmapped models, which means high and lowpoly modeling and baking. That can be a painful process for the beginning either. Depends ofc.
