If it hasn't changed, what it does is render your viewport to a texture. You can't just move around your entire map expecting it to be done on the fly, but room by room is better than nothing.

It's also quick to render, about 5 seconds on the PC at work.

Still it's better than nothing, but I'm curious if it takes light through glass and stuff as well, so it's not entirelly blocked off by any kind of brushes.

Is it an accurate representation of the real thing

How does the lighting compare to the map when it's viewed in-game?

It's fairly close as far as I remember. Be it Dark Messiah I saw this on, glass and other transparent materials were not really there for me to recall whether that works fine.

However I don't suppose it should be any different. The system takes the light_environment and other light settings in the area around your viewport and vrad does its thing as it usually does, probably with settings close to "fast"

Wow lighting preview, welcome to the future

Still have no clear if new Hammer features are usable in non orange box games/mods so there are 2 versions of each tool now. Someone can clarify?

By default the SDK launcher will launch the Orange Box versions ofHammer, Face Poser, and Model Viewer.

Adding "-engine ep1" to the startup parameters for SourceSDK will launch the old stuff.

well, hammer is not responding since few minutes atm after I tried ray-traced lighting preview :/

    Quad-Core Cpu here :/

I will close it and see again.

EDIT: I couldn't move around the viewport too

I can't get any of the light preview stuff working either. The 3D lighting preview just corrupts the textures, and the ray-traced lighting freezes hammer for me too. It would be really nice if this feature did work...

Tried restarting it for couple of times and same...

OR! you have to compile it first?

edit: refreshing sdk content and we'll see.

    oh and

    Quote

Indeed. In fact it's so fresh and piping hot I am still working on thedetailed release notes.

Here are a couple of things to look out for right away.

    1. The sourcesdk_content folder is not getting updated consistently so I

suggest renaming your 'sourcesdk' and 'sourcesdk_content' directories

before running the new SDK the first time. I will update the SDK

Launcher to get around this problem but this is the workaround for now.

    2. '3D Lighting Preview' in Hammer works but you should avoid '3D

Ray-traced Lighting Preview'. Really bogs down your machine.

might want to backup any maps you are working on before starting the new sdk just incase something unexpected happens
