I was circumcised at birth. My parents said it was recommended by the doctor as a cleanliness thing. Most of my friends (assuming they're not lying) are circumcised. I have 1 friend who was so embarrassed about his uncircumcised penis that he had it circumcised when he was 16. Ouch.

I doubt circumcision has much of an influence on anything. Like other people said, if the soap goes towards your crotch at any point chances are you're going to give it a thorough scrubbing. As far as women go I think more emphasis is put on size than anything else, and even then people say as long as your dick isn't like 3" long it makes no difference.

i dont really feel like reading through this but i along with afaik everyone else i know am circumcised. i think uncircumcised ones are funny looking and the only two girls that have said something about uncircumcised ones have said they're gross but i guess they're just used to them

I think arguing for or against circumcision is stupid. If you're in a relationship with a person who gives you shit for having the penis you're born with you probably shouldn't be with that person anyway. I wouldn't make it an America vs the world thing either...it's a personal choice made by individual families.

Birth is traumatic enough as it is. Its all nice and warm in the womb, then bam some doctor is sticking needles in you, fluorescent lights, plastic, incubators, and then they had to go ahead and painfully snip off some of my genitals...

we need a better birth system in this country, it might make people happier

I 100% agree with Thrik. It seems circumcision's popularity in some countries (including the states) is more down to ignorance and social pressure rather than any kind of benefit. If it was meant to be chopped off by default, we wouldn't have it in the first place.

technically that's not true, it might be something left over from evolution, such as the tailbone or the appendix. The appendix can be removed with no real harm being done. Then again I haven't seen a religion or social culture where it's a sign of status to have your appendix removed.

im not defending anything here (since most uncircumcised people here seem to have issues with it) but in the past people where known to be less hygenic. nowadays we know its good to keep ourselves clean and we have the facilities but back in the day people didnt. so.. my point being that it also might have been some practical precaution?

yeah perhaps, just the same as "don't eat pork" was probably put in place because people were dying from eating month-old pigs and getting diseases.

it's odd that we feel the need to defend and carry on these old traditions though

I recently had a drink with a few ex-colleagues, and one of them (a woman) was talking about the fact that all of her sisters and friends were having 2 to 3 children. Each time she had a discussion with them, it was like "So, when is it your turn?". For most people around here, having children is no longer a conscious choice: a fulfilling life can't go without giving birth, does it?

My colleague doesn't want kids for now, she thinks the world is too populated already and if she's gonna have any, she'll prefer adoption. She said she felt strange at family dinners when all of her sisters came along with their 2-3 kids each running & screaming all around, like she's a stranger.

I believe, despite the fact that this example is completely off-topic, that this is a similar thing to the circumcision in America. It's so old traditions that it kind of merged with people's instincts, even though there's no longer any good explanation for doing so. Kind of a demesured fashion: nobody remembers where is came from, but if you're to be "in", you gotta follow the movement.

EDIT: Another example an ex-girlfriend who, being 20 years old, had already decided that she'd marry at 28, and make her 1st children at 28, the second at 30 and the last one at 32, so they're all 18 when she turns 50. I found that pretty depressing. She didn't care who she'd marry or have children with ("whoever happens to be around at that time"), but knew when it would happen and there was no way to argue with that. Her parents had 3 children btw.

I get your point about fitting in, but your examples are a bit off.. I can understand your colleague, but having a child is something primal deep inside everyone of us.. you know, survival of the species. And the fact that she feels like a stranger, there you are spot on, she's not a mum so her sisters can't relate to her anymore..

On the topic of your ex-girlfriend, she just has a plan.. rather nice one too imho. I don't find that depressing at all.

I think it's problematic to compare the urge or "will" to replicate with the custom to chop off the tip of a boy's penis, be it for religious, traditional or hygienic reasons.

There is more to having kids than just tradition, it is a necessity for a species (or in our case also "a civilization") in order to continue existence.

On a personal level, it should be up to everyone personally, if you want to pass on your gens to the next generation. The status quo is, that most people have kids, as opposed to people who prefer to be kid-less (excluding couples that wish to have kids but can't).

The fact that your colleague feels that she is not meeting society's expectations is unfortunate, but her own choice..As opposed to baby boys, who are circumcised without any questions being asked, for very questionable reason (as in: absolutely not necessary).
