Get the cheapest

Tbh - when starting texturing you should try to get into materials and such first. There's a whole lot to experience without a wacom and you can get the wacom later then you feel you really have the thrill for textures.

On the wacom itself once more - don't get a plagiat (like medion, pentagram or whatever) but use an original wacom - the plagiats all use battery pens and suck on reaction and detail (as i had to experience myself )

"Wacom Graphire 4 classic XL" is cheap and good. Got that for a year now and it's really enough if you don't plan to get into painting deeply I think.

Same here.

we have the intuos pads at school, not sure as to the size but they are pretty big.

I would like one, but they are too damn expensive, but I know I will probably get one sooner or later.

Well i guess it depends on the method you want to use.. It's anyway always a cool thing to have a graphic tablet, but i'm not sure it will be that useful if you do photoref based textures, i do every of them with my mouse and i don't have any problem. But if it's painting textures you head for, definitely get one .

Intuos are really fucking cool, i got a A4 one and it's comfortable and really accurate for drawing lines, although for texturing you maybe won't need that, so try getting a not so expensive one which is pressure sensitive because that a really handy tool

It's of course up to the style you're doing, but in general you don't necessarily need a tablet to make regular world textures. It comes handy at places but I usually tend to reach for my at some point of the process.

I've got the Graphire4 XL and so far I've loved it. Totally worth the money.

I have a Graphire3 that I've had for a long time and and it's still serving me nicely. Worked on an Intuos2/3 a few times, didn't notice a huge difference in sensitivity (though I wasn't as experienced then and didn't have alot of time to play with it) but they do have little touchpad buttons which are nice.

But don't get an Intuos, you don't need to spend that money.

I'd say if you can find a Graphire3 it's prolly gonna be cheaper, it's gonna do you just fine for starting off, and you don't have to pay the newest version premium. The 4 series is definitely gonna be better *technically* but until you've got a lot of experience down with it, it's not gonna make a difference. It's not like putting a pen or pencil to paper, the feel is different both psychologically and physically.

Just whatever you do don't get the new Bluetooth ones, Bluetooth is evil.

Let me put it this way, go down to Best Buy and play with the Gateway Cx210x Tablet PC, then imagine something that feels either 10x (Graphire3), 100x(Graphire4), or 1000x(Intuos) better, and make your decision.

One of these days I'll get that Cintiq I've been dreaming of *sigh*

I wish you'd of made this post awhile ago, our company just got new Wacom in. They raffled off all 10 the old ones, and I won and just resold them out.
