Haha yeah, I dont get why they're almost bragging about it being on multiple DVDs, if anything they should hide that fact. Seems like theres a lot of stuff happening in compressing data without losing much lately, but apparently Carmack is taking a different approach

All of you who are saying that your current internet lines won't be enough in some years when games start taking up 50 gigs. Well, I think you are forgetting the fact that odds are that internet connection speeds will also go up.

But as connection speeds go up, so does the size of games. But internet connection speeds depend on the basic wiring of the country. Broadband is possible with standard phone lines at the moment, but anything further isn't. It's going to be a while until it catches up with the increasing game sizes.

    Eventually.

Everyone is getting excited that we will be eligible for 24mb/s* in this area next year, so the time when 50gb files are no problemo are rather far off. And by the time it isn’t a problem everyone will have moved onto ultra definition Jesus Discs (or something) with enough storage space for a small universe and saying ‘remember those Blu-Ray Discs? I don’t know how we could watch anything so grainy on a TV instead of projected directly into our mind via some cerebral device in twelve different dimensions.’

    * For the low, low cost of your soul, excess limbs and monthly payments of blood sacrifices, the only restriction being a “fair use policy” that means if you actually use the internet it gets throttled or you get visited by serious men in big suits, with large briefcases and thin watches.
