    Who else has played this?

Holy hell is this game beautiful. My jaw literally dropped during the opening sequence, and my wife even stopped what she was doing to watch. The ground detail is of course lower-res, but at altitude the game is utterly stunning. The planes animate crazy smoothly including the engine expanding and contracting with different velocity (with a pretty hot afterburner effect) as well as visible air brakes that open up when you throttle down far enough.

I picked up Ace Combat Zero on the PS2 a while back but had a hard time getting into it... tough to identify targets, felt weird aiming and shooting... none of that here. I had a little trouble orienting myself to where the next group of targets should be, but it was much easier to lock on with the missiles and even get some awesome MG kills. There's a sweet firing mode on the F-16 in the demo where you can insta-lock on about 4 targets and fire off a giant volley of missiles, which is pretty badass.

Yeah. Highly recommend you check this one out.

I gave it a play last night and was also impressed. I never played AC5 but did enjoy AC4 on the PS2, so I wasn't that surprised I liked this one. What I love about the AC games is that they might feature real planes, but they plonk you into far fetched scenarios that are so much more interesting that ordinary flight sims. Those nimbus missiles you end up facing in the demo are an example, but AC4 had some really cool missions tasking you with taking out an orbital cannon before it can launch from its rollercoaster-esque ramp, or sinking giant submarines that have some sort of area effect weapon that destroyed anything below a certain altitude. Also, while the storylines (and place names....Gracemeria, urgh!) tend to be a little cheesy and badly acted, I do appreciate how much more involved they are than your typical flight sim. The fact they've got multiplayer in this one just makes it more appealing - coop over Live to replace your wingmen in the campaign would be cool too.

Just tried it on a 360 at work, looks purdy, and the gameplay is Ace Combat alright.

Good stuff, definitely picking it up when its released.

The demo's great, but 16-player dogfights over Live will take the biscuit.
