Sony is slashing the price of its PlayStation 3 games console by 17% in the US to boost sales. As a result of the $100 price cut the PS3 will now cost $500 (£249), $20 more than the rival Microsoft Xbox and twice as much as the Nintendo Wii.

Aaaaand I'm still not the slightest bit interested in getting a PS3.

I would rather have an 360 because of it's collection of games and Xbox Live.

    I don't need a HD-Multimedia center because I already have one, it's called...TEH PC!!!

when i get a console it'll be the PS3 probably. The 360 is like a console trying to be a PC, and failing hard, so I rather have a good console that knows it's a console :S

And doesn't break every 2 months.

I think a major thing to consider is that the 360 has been out for ages and naturally has a vast software collection. When the 360 was at the same stage the PS3 is currently at, everyone was saying how destined for failure it was due to its shit, uncompelling game library. Weirdly, everyone seems to have since completely forgotten about this.

Make no mistake, some seriously good games will hit the PS3 regardless of Sony's pre-release marketing (which I think the negative aspect/criticism of was overblown, personally).

It's not like the Microsoft isn't massively deserving of criticism considering they've had 360s breaking down en masse since release and have only recently even acknowledged it and gone some way towards appeasing the huge number of people affected.

I'll get both eventually as I love games and will want to play exclusives (even if only time-limited exclusives) on both. Who really cares about the cost if you work, considering what you get in return?

I'd rather have a Wii out of all the consoles. It's the only console that really has 'something' more than the PC.

    Quoted for truth mate.

Sony just needs to get off its arse and re-integrate the rumble feature again. That along with a lower price and a better range of games should flog plenty more units. Random fact: In terms of raw numbers the PS3 is outselling the PS2 at the same point in its launch cycle.

But the market has expanded since.

I spend far too few time with my 360 already, buying a PS3 wouldn't pay off for me. I would rather invest it in new PC hardware. I guess I'm more of a PC gamer after all.

I have to agree that the PS3 is still getting too much shit from people, long after its initial release. It looks like Sony is learning from its mistakes and the price drop is a reasonable step. The 360 is by no means without mistakes.

It's actually interesting what different people look for in a console nowadays. One of my friends for instance is getting a PS3, but not because of the collection of games that's out there, but because it comes with a blu ray drive and he is a real home cinema nut. The sound of the cooler is another important factor to him, because you can't even hear whether the PS3 is on or not, whereas the 360 sometimes reminds me more of a vacuum cleaner than a games console..

frie i feel like that with every console i buy.

still i think about getting a ps3 because there is plenty of ps2 titles i want to play and that ARE backwards compatible.

if i subtract the price of a ps2(that i would buy right now) from the ps3 also plus the 100 dollar price cut form America that will find its way to europe eventually than it has an acceptable price tag

Definitely a step in the right direction in terms of price. Now I just hope they'll release some decent games soon so I can stop using it as a dedicated Blu-Ray/Super Startdust player :G

Still doesn't change the fact that anyone who's looking for the best games selection these days would be brain dead to go for a PS3.

Really hope Sony got some exciting stuff in store for their conference on Wednesday~they'll need it~

Never been a fan of the xbox myself, the Playstation seems much more of a 'gamer' console, it gets the stronger franchises and more support from the Japanese market. 360 seems to be much more casual, lots of sports games and generic shooters I couldn’t really care for. If I got a 360 it’d purely be for Dead Rising and EDF.

I find it strange how much hate the Playstation gets, sure they behaved extremely arrogant during its launch but it’s still been the best console for the last two generations. True, it still needs some strong games released on it, currently I mainly want one for Super Stardust HD, loved that thing on the Amiga... I think I'll wait for Devil May Cry 4 and Street Fighter before I purchase it though, in case the price drop is here too (haha!).

To be honest it’ll be worth it in a few years when the danmaku and fighting games get released to their cult circles in Korea/Japan. Pain in the ass to get that stuff at the moment.

Odd, I've always been of the opposite opinion. The people I know who are more "hardcore" gamers tend to be Xbox/360 fans, and its the "semi-gamers" who seem to go for the PS2/PS3. I can see your point in some regards though as the PS2 certainly had a huge supply of niche and obscure titles that made it indispensible for dedicated gamers, but I've always found that one of the big problems the 360 faces is its lack of appeal to casual gamers as opposed to the hardcore.

Then again I love racing games and shooters, so I guess I'm almost the ideal customer for the 360

Racing games and shooters are rather undemanding, though?

Well I guess it all boils down to what you label as hardcore/casual. Could be it by how often they play, how many games they go through, what genres they play, how cult they are, etc. Thinking about it, I've always thought "casual" to be your average guy who picks up a console for the latest roster update in FIFA, "hardcore" to be people who think

and a huge grey area in between. Which I believe means my definition sucks, but in my defence, the labels themselves suck overly more.Either way, I think the strategy RPG’s, shmups, fighters and floaty action games I enjoy are going to be mainly PS3 bound!

Still to expensive and no games that make me care enough to put out that kind of cash.

I'm definitely looking forward to Uncharted and Lair, I'm still not quite sure about Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank, but they look solid enough.
