Microsoft has said that it is facing a bill of more than $1bn to cover the cost of offering extended warranties, after failings with its Xbox 360.The company admitted it had been forced to make "an unacceptable number of repairs" to the consoles after key hardware failed.

And for the original post announcing the new warranty:

I think it's a good thing they've at least stepped forward with this, albeit after quite some time. Was getting kind of ridiculous that the UK repair centre receives around 1500 360s per day yet Microsoft kept totally silent on the matter.

I was very curious about how long they would remain tight lipped about the problem when such a large portion of the gaming media around the world was hounding them for it, so it's nice to finally have an answer. I think it is a costly move but one that ultimately had to be done, as word was beginning to eek outside of the gaming community and into the mainstream. I also think that it was very good timing on Microsoft's part - getting this announcement out before E3 means people have their faith in the company somewhat restored, and it means they don't have to concern themselves with a negative issue once at the show. I'm pleased at the move

At least they've finally moved beyond the "vocal minority" bullshit and taken it on the chin. Like ReNo said, word was beginning to get around.

When your cash flow is over 50 billion dollars, this isn't a hard pill to swallow.

Yea, I saw this earlier today, and it happened to be right as I was starting to wonder what would happen as soon as my MS warranty ended, since I got a 3 year extended one but its from the store I bought it from.... But at this rate I don't think I'll ever need to worry, and having it only die once thus far in almost a year now, i think I'm doin good.

Serves them right, its a fucking joke that it took this long to get to this point.

Hopefully they'll soon have fixed the RROD problems on all new/"repaired" 360s so that this wont be necessary.
