Opinion: If Sony Releases a Wii-Like Controller...

The rumors section in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly says that Sony will be "retrofitting" the PlayStation 2 console with a Wii-style motion sensing controller by Christmas.

Yes, this is just a rumor for the time being, but EGM's got a pretty good track record. I really hope for Sony's sake, though, that this isn't true. If so, it would be strong evidence that Sony is a company without a rudder. Without a clear vision of the future. With no idea which way the wind is blowing. A follower, not a leader.

Sony has pretty much always been a follower when it comes to technology and ideas. Didn't you notice?

What? Sony was a leader with Betamax and it took over the market because of it's....

    ....ooops.

Wait I meant those Minidiscs things that totally took over the recordable music...oh wait...

Seriously this time, the Sony Connect service that competed with iTunes was by far the...oh wait...didn't that just shut down?

Ok, the PSP UMD is now THE standard in portable disc based movie... uh...not so much.

But Blu-Ray is gonna do it!

Why would they do this for the Playstation 2, even if they put it out who is going to make games for this new joypad? And the Playstation 3 controller already has motion sensors in it, just not to the same extreme as the Wii.

To be honest if this were true I don’t see anyone, developers or gamers, giving a crap about it. But it may put emphasis on the Wii effectively being a giant gimmick most people don’t care about anymore. Anyone know someone with a Wii that isn’t caked in dust?

I think your closing sentence should’ve spelt it $ony for good measure...

    Yes.

If this were true it'd just show Sony is now getting pathetic... but I doubt it's true... this just seems too ridiculous.

though I suppose stranger things have happened.

As long as they keep paying my wages...

Seriously though, yeah I think Sony have screwed up many times as Izuno points out, but when they get it right (PS1 / PS2) it seems to work.

I don't actually know anything about the "Sony wii controller" but I should imagine its just the tech that's going to get added to the existing dual shock not a design overhaul of the controller itself. Anyone remember the last abortion of a redesign the controller got?

    [Blocked Image: http://www.modojo.com/media/features/159/boomerang.jpg]

Hopefully this news is just heads up on a refinement of the existing 6-axis control, and hopefully we'll also get rumble back in the next iteration of the controller now that Sony have settled with Immersion.

Anyways to the matter at hand. Milk and two sugars Vivi?

Yeah, me. All my mates who have one. They've only just really come back in stock in the UK after release in December.

I do however still know noone with a PS3 and the only time I've seen one is in the local Sony Centre window.

i do, all my friends that have one are constantly playing.

i totally disagree with the wii being a gimmick. but then i'd agree if you said that it's lacking some quality titles. but then it's a different concept, it'll take a while since the developers get the momentum

Contrary to this, everyone I know with a Wii hardly plays the thing since there's basically nothing decent out for em over here right now. Well except Mario Charged Strikers which is top

Pretty much everyone I work with at Sony has a PS3 except me (too skint) but this is no surprise since we were sold em internally at a discount.

Outside of work I know only 1 person with a PS3 at the mo, pretty much everyone I know into gaming is hooked up on the 360, 'cause of the great range of games on it. But yeah back to the point Wii is getting horribly stale right now, there's just not enough quality stuff to play yet.

I agree on the staleness of the games. Mario Strikes is a welcome breath of fresh air and as I got interupted playing Zelda midway through it (pesky final projects) I'm getting back into that now.

Plus whenever we were/are drunk out comes Wii Sports and Wario

    oh wario.... good lord

i left my friends house with my jaw in pain because we laughed so hard... i dont even wanna know how fun it is when drunk, i'd probably become an alcoholic if i did

Well glad to see I’m not the only one. I know a lot of people with a Wii, but they don’t play it anymore because once the Wii-Remote shtick wears off it’s a collection of poor games with poor graphics (one said it was "just a hat for his xbox"). As a party console it’s vaguely enjoyable, but when drunk we just got pissed off at Wario’s seemingly random winning and losing criteria.

I know a few people with a PS3, and every single one of them is a ‘gamer,’ the only person who I know that’s into the Wii in a big way is quite the opposite. If I was to get one, it would purely be for the new Zelda game.

Anyway, verging off-topic here. I think the original article is a dirty lie.

I play my Wii at least a few times a week, usually grinding through various party games to unlock stuff, or to play Wii Sports Tennis. While I do lament the lack of good single player games, I think it will pick up in the near future. But the Wii certainly has more good games than the PS3 at this point. One can only play so much Resistance.

One of these days I need to break down and buy a 360... but I'm too lazy.
