testing new site

    Like your design KFS, it's really clean and comfortable. How will you make the portfolio itself? Like how the images are placed and info about the different projects.

    I also got a new design for my portfolio, but I don't have any content to put in it yet so it's just placeholder crap all over (aka. none of the links work!).

    I should clarify quick: the first link is the portfolio main page, and the 3 images represent the 3 categories - professional, independent, and wip (decided to nuke that section to keep the site a little easier to navigate). The second link is a current layout for an individual map/project, which now has 6 screens instead of 3 (and much better ones in WIDESCREEN to boot!).

    It's interesting you mentioned the horizontal alignment; I tried running those vertically down each side with the text area (which will include the description, general specs, and download links) in the middle but didn't like it as much... the more I think about it that might actually be an approach to try. I do like the row of 3 across the top, but then I don't know what to do with the bottom 3 images or the text stuff - the site as a whole is too wide for just a text description filling that whole thing. Maybe the description section could cover two of the image columns with the specs/download taking the right side? Hmm.

    At the top, you might want to swap out the site URL for your name since this is your personal portfolio. Your name should be very prominent.

    Since a lot of people will probably have a pop-up blocker of some kind, you might want to just display clicked images normally. People may want to open your images in separate tabs, and if they try to look at all your images at once they'll get frustrated with a cluttered screen.

    Yeah, avoid the Javascript pop-up things that take over your URLs (eg: javascript:ImageWindow('ns_eclipse_1.jpg', 'ns_eclipse_1.jpg')) like the plague.

    If you absolutely must have pop-ups (although be aware that a lot of people including me use Firefox which can and does simply redirect and pop-ups into a new tab in the background), use one which adds an onclick to the link itself rather than completely replaces it.

    Failing that, a supremely popular technique right now is to use Lightbox or a variant thereof (Greybox, etc). I don't personally like the Lightbox idea much, but it does have its place in portfolios I guess.

    This isn't hooked up for non-direct navigation yet, but have at it and let me know what you think. There's still stuff missing (mostly for the old content shots) and some descriptions in disarray or needing re-writing, but the functionality should all be there.

    Meh? good, bad? how's the portfolio vibe? is it too different from the rest of the site? do the text boxes over the images work?

    Hoping to launch this this week once I get all the content hooked up (maybe as early as tomorrow night) but I imagine I'll still be tweaking little things for weeks/months/years.

    The only minor complaint I have is that on 1024x768, the site borders right up to the edges of the browser and this doesn't look so good. It'd look much nicer if there were at least the same amount of space between the design and the browser edges as there is between the three big images. As it is, it looks quite cramped.

    This goes for the other page(s) on the site too. Bordering right up against the browser borders is a bit of a no-no.

    Thumbs up, though. I'd go with this one.

    haha, with all my old site designs people were like, "dude, people use higher than 640x480" and now that I've embraced my higher-resolution overlords it's too wide?????

    I can probably pull it in to 980 wide (it's 1000 right now, which would strip 10 pixels off either spacer and put them to each outside edge of the site. Not much, but probably would help 1024 users a bit. I'll look into it. Good news is, if Google Analytics is telling the truth, over 85% of my visits are from higher than 1024x768.

    Probably true, considering the design audience; 1024x768 is by far the most common in general though, and even though my desktop resolution at work is 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 at home, I run my browser at both locations in a 1024x768 window. I think most people on large widescreen resolutions do this. Not sure if Google is smart enough to detect that.

    This is true. I tend to keep mine close to 1280x720 (on a 1900x1200 res monitor), so not unreasonable to expect some smaller windows on other resolutions.

    I'll poke at the stuff later this week to see if I can bring it in a bit. Won't be much, but probably enough to make it comfortable for 1024.
