I'm not all sure about some of the textures though, reminds me of the first DoD beta maps for some reason. Could be risky changing them though, might lose what you going for.

    Quote from Father Brandon

    point out which textures.

like.... all of them. They are all made by kamikazi! (scott jordan) from the dod team.

Heh wierd sense of justice coming through here. Guess I know my stuff. I remember Kamikazi! too. I'm defintely sideing with you Klein, don't get me wrong. I just don't want to be unfair.

I'm very interested to what he has to say. And if he will ever come back to say it.

Also as a further notice, this by no means reflect on Master Sword : Continued in any way, I'm mapping for it and hell no my map is not a direct rip off. Just sad this actually happened.

oh I'm pretty interested in what he has to say myself. I'm not angry, because my stuff wasn't stolen. I just feel sorry for the mapper (Andy)....

But yeah let's hear what the guy has to say then shall we ?

I hope he comes back to post one more time, making some excuse or whatever. Then ban him.

wow that is so blantant. I thought those pics looked familiar...then IR's post confirmed it.

    seriously...WTF???

this was once a problem on the DoD Mapping forums...but never this blantant. I have heard of extracting and using textures without permission, but ripping of architecture to this extreme is a act i have never seen before.

    wow.

Am I the only one who feels this isn't really that huge of a deal? I guess it's kind of rude artistically, but it's pretty obvious from the screenshots if you look closely that he didn't rip the map or anything like that, he just built the scene with the arrangement and similar architecture of the screenshot. He's not using the same textures or anything. I could totally understand if it was for another dod map, but this is like a single player RPG mod isn't it? Nobody is going to see this and become confused thinking it was someone elses work when it's not. I think a little ribbing is in order for catching him, but I don't think he meant anything bad by it . . . It really is his own work, he just copied something by eye from a screenshot, I see no evidence that he literally ripped off someone elses work and tried to pass it off as his own. Do I think he was wrong to copy a reference so closley, especially from anther hl map? Yes, and it should probably be frowned upon. But you guys are making it sound much more severe than what it is I believe. I don't think there was any malicious intent here . . .

well perhaps that is true, Zaph. if that's all, i see your point. but it did seem like he intentially tried to recreated Andy's map so that's what people were reacting to. even if there is no melicious intent, i personally feel it's not cool to copy someone else's stuff that closely (and yes it does appear to not be EXACT) without acknoledging it. maybe there is a fine line somewhere and we haven't all agreed on where it cuts. at first glance it really does look like an attempt at an exact copy.

Yea, I think it's ok to frown upon it, and to say that you should probably not follow your reference that closley, if your reference is someone else's screenshot. I just think it's not as serious as say, making another dod map with that in it. it's like there is no conflict of interest there, except for in the artistic community. I'm not saying it's cool to do, but you guys reacted like he just drop kicked a baby off a freeway overpass.

You can't steal dod textures aslong as it's for a HL mod. Since Valve took over DoD, and Valve allows free use of thier content for other HL mods.

I'd admit straight up that I purhaps over-reacted in the heat of the moment. I've spoken to him before and he seems like a nice guy. But my views are still the same, I see what you mean Zaphod and your statement does have some validity, but even though it's not for the same mod (which agreed, helps his case), the hard part about Level Design, usually is that. Design. If some does this, I'll literally - 10 points to judge his map, because well, he didn't do the design, the hard part.

I once used for cs_thestation like a alpha shot of max payne to make my one subway tunnel. Then by my own design I built the rest of the subway and everything such as waiting area, staff room and city around it, but even then that's like not even close to this in comparasion.

There's nothing wrong with getting inspiration from maps, but copying direct scences should be frowned and maybe even scorned.

looking at other peoples work is natural .. i cant play a game without look at how things were build taking heaps of screens .. i mean looking at eachothers work and learning from it is important pro and non-pro..

but this is just a direct copy ... i mean even the shutters are placed the same way.. the cart and what not..

this wouldnt have been half as bad if the guy would just have told from the start that he created this upon andie's design.. i guess

I thought the look of that area would be nice in an RPG environment, so I designed it from scratch to look like it, I look upon decompiling with disgust, as in the past, one of my maps had been decompiled without permission. that is the only area I looked upon for referance, I am sorry if this has caused alot of problems, If the original mapper wants, I will change that area completely. but when I first looked upon it, I thought, thats the scene that would be good for an RPG. again, I apologize.

Well I for one forgive you. It was blown out of proportion maybe, but I guess that's up for andy to decide. At least now you know what not to do.
