Israeli's about to build first cyborg!

    Hi,

    the title of this thread might be a little excagurated but Israeli scientists have found a way to have neurons outside the brain function in combination with selfbuild hardware. This means that real life cyborg aren't that far away anymore. I'm curious as to where this will bring mankind.

    Researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel have demonstrated that neurons cultured outside the brain can be imprinted with multiple rudimentary memories that persist for days without interfering with or wiping out others.

    Yeah, but seriously. Many (and I mean MANY) people have speculated about robots, cyborgs and whatnot who would take over the earth. Is this fairytales or is this real? I mean, the indians thaught that the first locomotions would bring doom and destruction (while it just came with the white man actually, but.. anyways). Look, many people have specualted about this, but in reality, it's almost always the unexpected angle we didnt look for what brought trouble. And, wouldn't it be cool if we could make cyborgs do all the dirty work for us?

    It's also really cool to look at the developement of robots over a long period of time.

    Anyway, whatever you think of it, this is a great milestone for science in many ways.

    We will all become lazy, no need for education and we need to find something to do for fun, which will only create more problems than we already have.

    But now you're assuming that movie will become reality. I doubt it though.

    Anyway, we are far far away from creating an artificial intelligence which is able to have consciousness of its existence, especially if you read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6600965.stm . It ask 4,096 processors to make half of a mouse brain running for 1 second.

    And as for the computers, i think the miniaturization of electronic components will be at one time limited by the physic laws, except if someone discover a superconductor working at the ambient temperature.

    How will this affect the poor ppl? Fun aint for free you know. Well mostly not anyway, i guess you could find a stone to play with or half a "stövel" as sailing boat or something. But on a serious note, 1984 (the book) is allready a reality with bigbrother sees everything, and terrorist actions, and restriction of smoking and use of alcohol etc. So i dont think cyborgs is to far away. Also they are allready here as cyborg actually is a mix between human and machine and we have lots of these allready. And its getting more advanced fast.

    Play with stones as in smashing glass, stealing spray cans to do grafitti etc.

    If there are cyborgs, there are basically no need for human workers, since we get tired, we whine, we need breaks etc.

    Thats kind of what i meant. If no work we wont be making any money. How will the poor ppl afford to do fun stuff and have eternal vacation?

    Truth is, we can not know what influence this will all have on our future. We can only speculate..

    Then I feel like asking, what is the purpose of robots\cyborgs?

    Wouldn't it be to do work for us? Things that are too dangerous, stressful, painful etc.

    After a while, we won't have human janitors, cause they are replaced by a more "powerful" Cyborg which can work day and night, and he doesn't bitch about having to clean up a mess. Then the cycle would expand and expand, removing more and more human jobs..

    Or is the whole Cyborg thing some kinda pet Israelites want for fun?

    1. We're discussing cyborgs. Robots are fully mechanized, cyborgs have human stuff in them (i.e. brains or arms).

    2. It's Israeli's, not Israelites..

    3. It's just some Israeli scientists who set this milestone. Israel has good scientists (because they're a smart nation) so they discovered this first. America, and I'm sure Sweden too (to name some) are doing research around the developement of cyborgs. It's not a secret cyborgs would make good soldiers, etc.. And it's sure as anything any nation wouldn't invest that much time in a project meant for ''recreational purposses''.
