hmm covers only very basic tips but it's still very useful for beginners. Like peris would say "making textures is like making love to a girl... you need maybe a few tutorials to get started but from then its all experience... Also tips from your buddies can be useful"

    good job man

You would help me very much to explain me how to make "good" brushes for texturing. Some tricks and tips. And how to use the brush options ...

I suggest making your own brushes. It's better to have your personal stuff, unique in a way. Once I'll find some time, I will go into how to create brushes for Photoshop, but to tell you the truth, I rarely if never use custom brushes for texturing. It's mostly round fussy texture.

These some of the brushes I created:

Maybe you should make a tutorial on how to make custom brushes.

oh boy thanks so much for saying this. you just got +1000exp in my mind <3

a tutorial on creating normalmaps from photobased textures would be nice. though i got my own workflow it would be nice to see how others do.

    greetings.

could you please stop that unneccessary discussion O_o

mr. Pericolos0 did so well in clearin this in the random texture thread...

yeh im no pro an all, but everyone knows what people mean with "next gen" on that forum, so quotin every post and whatnot is so not useful but annoying instead...

i'm sorry but i don't wanna scroll around in such threads to not must read all of these lines of discussion. i just wanna see the pictures

and just because 3-4 elite pro people are against using such "unpro" terms they don't have to destroy thread after thread...

Thanks a lot for doing this, I've never tried to make textures before for Source, just need to get the normal map working.

Also, how do you get spec maps working in Source?

depends, either make a spec map and save it out as a vtf and throw

    $envmapmask "path/texture"

in your vmt or put the specmap in the normal maps' alpha channel and add

    "$normalmapalphaenvmapmask" 1

Rokusho39: Glad the tutorial could be of help.

You can take your texture further by adding dirt, grundge and other things that show detail. I took about 5 mins to overlay a few other textures and ended up with this:

Also don't have those paint lines so straight. Take a small brush and make edges uneven.

Method - Have you tried crazy bump? It outputs better results than that photoshop filter thing.

Zombie: I've seen some posts about it on these forums, but without any images of the program didn't want to try. Looks very good, I especially like the colored preview window.

    Here's a comparison:

Well, i decided to try and make it a little better. I didn't really want to go for an overly decayed look, but I still like it.
