So what are your favourites soundtracks in a game ?

Imo, Diablo2 ones are the best, it also won some prizes btw. And I love Quake 3 too, the mix of techno/heavy metal is something superb ~~

And they never get repetitive. I also like Resident Evil 3's ones, they can really make u feel for the disaster and frighten you as I never seen in another game (havent played D3 yet btw )

    super mario bros

    OMG your right !

Sim citys musics are cool, but tend to get a bit boring after a while.

i think the timeless themes are AMAZING when we update them on real instruments.

mario, zelda, metroid... all awesome with orchestras.

on a selfish side note, the BiA music was recorded with a real orchestra in prague and is AMAZING.

    All of the above.

    Well, maybe not FFX-2.

Nobuo and chums recently did a few Final Fantasy tracks with an orchestra, it sold out in the first nanosecond or something equally ridiculous.

I think a better topic would be the best USE of music. Sure, it's nice that games have totally happening soundtracks, but they've got to be put to good use. For instance Half-lifes soundtrack wasn't really that great, but rising to the surface on that lift with the music starting up really got you pumped to run around dodging random explosions and watch highly trained marines throw grenades vertically into the ground at their own feet.

And the Final Fantasy tracks for the end battles are obviously pre-planned affairs, the cool music kicking in during FFIX's final battle, for example, almost made up for the fact they pulled the entire final battle straight out of their asses. FF7's one winged angel track is probably the only video game track in history people know the name too. And FFX is hard to describe without giving anything away... but, wowz0r.
