Marketing, not developing. In reality it's just a cartoony rehash of the same old game. This is the kind of stuff that makes the press wanky and makes games suck. Hello? We're making GAMES, not pixar feature films. It's the same old tech, it's just more exaggerated in this case.

But your counter case was Duke Nukem Forever... and you're talking about marketing. Which the game has none of. Catan on XBLA has better marketing by that standard.

The truth is this isn't deep penetrative marketing anyway given that it's shakycam stuff released to the hardcore game sites. That's practically none of your audience. They did that for the fans and to create some fun word of mouth. It did, you're talking about it so... marketing wins? One to nothing.

I can't believe they're removing grenades. > Like the 1up guy said... it's like getting a new fighting game and finding your favourite character's moves are all gone.

I mean, really, SECONDARY grenades... how cool were they? Yes, nades contributed to the intense spamming (esp. Dustbowl), but they also formed the heart of the charm and uniqueness of TFC.

I really hope they didn't just remove it so the game could be nerfed to hell and played on consoles alongside PC. :-/

who cares frankly - I'm tired of this "OMG NO GRENADES" bs, it's getting boring to listen to. I bet you're going to buy the game anyway so relax a little and accept what valve is doing :S

Why do you think so many people are saying it? Just to be annoying? Name one of the key features of your favourite game and then imagine the dev removing that from the sequel that you've been looking forward to for so long.

Having said that, I am still gonna buy it, and I look forward to seeing what they do with the series. I just hope it was a decision based around spam and other negatives, rather than, like I said above, dumbing the game down for consoles and having it adversely effect the PC version.

Anyway, Mazy's right ('play TFC if you want nades...') so I'm prepared to give Valve's TF2 a chance since everything else about the game looks awesome.

People whined like shit about CSS features, and DoD:S features - but the people who play those games love them, even with their flaws and massive differences.

Like twiz was saying in IRC it's a sequel - ppl would prbly moan pretty hard if they just remade everything with new gfx, so at least they're changing it up.

Developers gave good reasons to remove nades, mainly stop spam and increase class differentiation if I remember correctly. The second is double edged IMO, it'll require more teamplay and that could end in frustration easily.

Yes conc/grenadejumps were engine bugs as far as I know, the developers never tought to use it as a jump boost. Just like the gravgun jumping thats used by those poeple playing hl2 in a hour.

Come off it, they expected people to jump on grenades just as much as they expected them to jump on rockets. They didn't expect you to be able to stay in the air indefinately so long as you had grenades and be able to hold one and double your velocity if lag was kind to you.

But yes, this conversation is done to death and either way, grenades are gone. But grenades in TFC were not "engine bugs," "just spam" or "the shields from CS."

how are them being engine bugs even relevant? they were a critical component to gameplay, bug or not.

    Yes.

Having thought about this though, I'm not too bothered about the changes. It was basically two points made on some other forum last night:

    a) The game is still being made by the guys who created a game I played heavily for years and years; chances are, they know what they're doing and despite whatever changes they make the game'll still probably be great fun and very balanced

    b) Team Fortress 2 was at no point ever designed to be a remake of Team Fortress (Classic), and until under a year ago we had no idea what was going on with it at all, let alone whether it'd ever be released; the fact we're getting a more closely tied sequel that happens to have some core changes is good enough for me

I mean let's face it, I was basically set upon never playing a proper Team Fortress game other than Fortress Forever ever again until the new TF2 was announced. We're still getting it, it still looks great, and it'll still probably be awesome.

My contempt of grenade removal is now over as it looks like there are actually quite a lot of nice changes being made beyond that, and it's going to be a wholly new-feeling game with pretty much every class being quite significantly changed. Reading the Wikipedia article about TF2 also hyped me up again, with all the classes clearly being quite different.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen this April hands-on preview:

    http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/ ... htm?Page=1

A notable thing mentioned in this article is that the Spy can actually still disguise himself as enemies, even though death feigning is out. I didn't realise this at all and thought they'd just replaced that ability with the whole cloak thing.

I think I'd better read that article properly at lunch.

Have you seen the videos of ppl abusing the grav gun?

And bic, I don't think they are critical to gameplay - they are critical to making players a one-man army, perhaps - but is that really the point of a team game?

Been doing some lunchtime reading. There're two other articles linked to in the first part of the one I linked to above, as it's the third in a series. The first two interview the guy behind QWTF, TFC, and now TF2. It's a really interesting read for any fan of the series and helps clear up a lot of the reasoning behind some of the decisions -- well worth a look.

We spent a lot of time focusing on better ways of making the game accessible. I really want to make sure people don’t confuse this with trying to simplifying the game. We felt that was the wrong approach. Instead we tried to find out ways to help people understand what was going on. Probably the best way to explain this is to point to specific features. The freeze-cam feature, when you die. We did a lot of play testing, and one thing we saw in TFC and other multiplayer games was the general confusion about death. A new player often dies. If we bring in a new player in and make him play any multiplayer game today usually he’ll die a few times and not really know what killed him. What we tried to do is eliminate that kind of problem. What are the problems new players face when they play these kinds of games, and how do we solve them specifically? “Who killed me? Why did I die?” We want to say, you died, here’s the person who killed you. Here’s what he killed you with. So on. We take that opportunity to tell you things – hey look you’re getting better at things—which is the stat panel. The persistent stats. All these things are about solving this core problem. Our approach to dealing with all these new players was to try and help them walk them through the game so they understood every step of the way what was going on. How they were doing, how they were getting better and so on.

And yes, they talk about why they removed the grenades in more depth. For example, the medic no longer has a conc as that's not really what the medic's for. So no more concs, but the TF2 Scout can do super-high propelled jumps as that's the class that is meant to have such flexible movement.

my point is that grenates were a gigantic part of the game, it would be like removing gun turrets or an entire class. the fact that grenades were a bug isn't relevant.
