I think the "one puzzle" is the best idea; it keeps the focus on design / gameplay, and you can interpret it to be a labyrinth or a room where you wait 20 minutes or whatever you want. But then it's also kind of general, which defeats the purpose of a contest to place constraints and foster creative solutions.

Sentura: Read up on the history of the labyrinth, first. Merk is obviously referring to the classical labyrinths - most commonly Greek / Roman / medieval.

it isn't. the term labyrinth is just a leftover from greek. It's the same as a maze. Think of the minotaur labyrinth. Do you think so many people would die finding the right way if it was just a straight line? ...

Hmm yeah that makes sense. I personally consider a labyrinth to be as I described, as otherwise it is simply a maze. I didn't realise that the minotaur's labyrinth was actually a maze though.

    From wikipedia:

    Code
The term labyrinth is often used interchangeably with maze, but modern scholars of the subject use a stricter definition. For them, a maze is a tour puzzle in the form of a complex branching passage with choices of path and direction; while a single-path ("unicursal") labyrinth has only a single Eulerian path to the center. A labyrinth has an unambiguous through-route to the center and back and is not designed to be difficult to navigate.

This unicursal design was wide-spread in artistic depictions of the Minotaur's Labyrinth even though both logic and literary descriptions of it make it clear that the Minotaur was trapped in a multicursal maze.

yeah look at the last paragraph there. "modern scholars" (whoever they might be) actually use the term in a wrong sense, since the first actual labyrinth (of the minotaur) described was a maze.

Okay, I conceed. I'm not changing my contest idea though as it is still valid!

Sorry to have caused this little argument in this thread.

Good it's cleared, otherwise there would be another "idiots arguing" thread created

Anyways, while I like Merkaba's idea I'd prefer still the good ol' small sp map concept.

We could easily have the same as we had on the 1024 contest, but larger.Like 'make a singleplayer level 2048x2048 units', that will force people from not doing the typical corridor running action, but more focus on ONE situation.

More like a little gameplay element that could be like "oh this is the time I'm introduced to this type of level miniboss thingy".

Like, "Hold the barricades, omfgbbq the fuckers are breaking through, kill them, omfg gunship ahead go collect that rpg they're keeping in their safe and destroy it!!!"

Like 5-10 minutes gameplay that takes place on one location, to see who can make the most out of it.

Edit - custom content should really be up to the person making it, but most time should prolly be spent on the actual layout and scripting to make it hella phunnn.

i might be some what new, but i recomend this idea. It is the simplest, and would bring the best out of a level designer. Then like 10 peeople try the level out, and judge it. the winner is the one with the best, gameplay, action, and memorability.(ie. a small battle with 4 combine, and 2 rebels, and yourself. Then out of nowhere, 3 combine dropships come and drop 12 guys, and they start to flank. then yyou receive reinforcements. then out of nowhere a strider comes, and destroys your building.)

Tried it, not a really good idea if you wanna know..

Havok doesn't like ball models being pushed by block-entities.

After 20 or 30 models, it starts to be really laggy and tricky (everything starts to be ejected from the modules)

let's make a hypercube map ak.a the C.U.B.E, the aim is to escape the cube without dying or being trapped.

"The film was a very successful product of the Canadian Film Centre's First Feature Project. Despite its low budget, the film achieved moderate commercial success and has acquired something of a cult status as a niche science-fiction title.

Much of the film's appeal lies in its surreal, almost Kafkaesque setting — no extensive attempt is made to explain what the cube in which the characters are confined is, or why it is created, or why the "inmates" were specifically selected to be imprisoned inside. Although the world "outside" is referred to, it is presented in an extremely abstract fashion as either a dark void or a bright white light."
