Ok the error I'm getting is really self explanatory. Yet I've opened it up in word pad and sorted out line 9, yet the error still persists. What is the problem? Fucking Hammer, I hate you. Why couldn't I learn Unreal ed or something instead.

    Thanks

P.S I've also tried renaming the .vmx file and using that, but to no avail.

    edit: lol didn't read.

Also you could post line 9 so we can check it, just in case...

If i know anything about source is that if it says line 9, then the error is not in line 9

Have you tried opening one of the auto-saves?

The only map with no autosaves, I don't know why it didn't save any.

    line 9:

    ( -288 -304 128 ) ( -288 -272 128 ) ( -240 -272 128 ) PK01/PK01_PANEL01A [ 1 0 0 0 ] [ 0 -1 0 -64 ] 0 0.25 0.25

Don't see anything out of the ordinary there, same as all the others.

This error happends because (most of the time) you used a forbidden caracter in one of your entities (like ", ', {, } or anything symbol related) or Hammer crashed during saving. Now your only way to fix that is to open up the VMF file with a text editor and try to find the lines were it starts to be messed up (shifts in the '{}' system usually).

I you still don't manage to fix it, I could help you with that. It happened to me a lot of time.

Are you sure you've got no autosaves? I had a bit of a panic with weaver's save file corrupting, and when I used hammer to try and open an autosave it didn't have any versions of it listed. Browsing there in windows however showed that there were autosaves, they just had a .vmf_autosave file extension which meant hammer wasn't showing them. I'd never had to use an autosave before other than at work, where our version of Hammer just uses the standard .vmf extension for autosaves, so I figure you might have fallen victim to it too.

Simply put a "]" at the end of that line 9 and you'll most probably be able to open up that vmf again, saving part of your info, or possibly all of it.

Nope I know where all my savefiles are but none of them are of this map for some odd reason. I've tried everything and still can't get it working, if anyone wants to take a look at it be my guest.

Is that a Source engine map? Some references in the file look like it (sky name, detail sprites...), but that isn't a Source VMF as I recognise it - none of mine look anything like that. Because of that I took a quick look at an old HL1 .map file and the format of your VMF is almost identical. So...what's going on there then?

Not the faintest to be honest, it's a hl2dm map and god only knows what happened to it when hammer crashed out.

Did you by any chance opened the file in hammer 3.4?

If it is like ReNo says you can try opening it in hammer 3.4, save as .map and try to open it again but in hammer 4, not sure if this will work but you can try

Wtf with this file ? This is not a .VMF, this is not a .RMF, this is not a .MAP. But inside, there's references to a source map (the skyname for example).. So what did you do with it XD ? Its seems kinda serious because there's a 500 lines func_detail at the end of the file.. I should'nt be nowhere near that large.

man. why are you guys freaking out so much.

create an empty map file. copy and paste parts of the broken map to the clean vmf file. save. an load it. look. if it works. copy some more.

What a genius ! *Copying the first ten lines* DOH ! It doesn't work !

Yeah, in fact if I you take the time to look at the file, everything seems corrupted, from line 1 to line 9437.

Either it's corrupted, or it's another map format.

By the way, if 9437 lines is everything that survived after the crash, it's not good news. The smallest of my map composed of one room and 16 water brushes is 4000 lines long.. I guess this is indeed another map format.

I've been messing with it some more, it's completely corrupt by the looks of it and thinks it's not even a .vmf file, no idea how that came about.

Looks identical to HL1 .map file format. Weird. I think you could rescue the brushwork though if that is the case with a bit of copy/paste...

Okay, I managed to load what looks like the main bit of brushwork in Hammer 3.5.

I removed folder paths from the texture names (not sure if that was necessary) and copied the main bit of brushwork into an empty .map file I made in hammer 3.5.

Gotta head out now, but you can probably figure out how to do it...

It's funny you say it's hl2dm map. I d/l'd it and opened it. One of the lines speak of wad files?

Couldn't get it to work in anything, sorry. I tried .map/.rmf formats. Essentially any .vmf should be able to be opened in .rmf as well (valve haven't changed the way the files work afaik) with missing props etc, but solids intact.

EDIT: seems like some did better than me. gj ifo!
