Not to mention the occasions when they would switch voices mid conversation - I spoke to a couple of haggard sounding beggars who, once I gave them a coin, started speaking like perfectly refined citizens ![]()

Goodbye real Fallout.
-
Fallout 3 plays primarily from a first-person perspective like Oblivion, and conversations with NPCs use a similar style of dialogue tree, but combat, questing, character creation and most importantly the tone and style of the gameplay shares more in common with Fallout 1 and 2 than Oblivion.

what a bunch of whiners. They're about ready to lynch all of bethseda and all they've seen is ~6 screenshots and 1 vague interview about a game thats coming out a year and half from now.
-
As far as I've learnt, a year and a half isn't really much time to develop a FP ACTION RPG game...
-
st0lve give it up... you cant win this, you have only seen vaguely what the game is about. sure itll be different, but nobody in 2007 would stick to the original fallout isometric system. if you expect a new fallout 1 from them you'll be dissappointed no matter what.
why not just take it as it is and look forward to a NEW CHAPTER in the fallout saga instead of saying "this is bullshit". i mean, the alternative would be NO FALLOUT 3 at all.

I think this one nails it
QuoteIf you are a fan who is adamantly against some significant changes to the way gameplay occurs in the Fallout series, I’m going to tell you right now and save you the disappointment: I don’t think you’ll like Fallout 3. However, if you’re a fan of the Fallout universe, of the unique look of the world, of the moral ambiguity, of the dark and often violent humor, and the invigorating branching story paths, then everything about what I’ve seen of Fallout 3 should please you.
In my opinion the best thing about the first two Fallout games was the game play, however I think it could become a pretty cool experience on its own terms. If you want the old stuff and dig the old game play theres probably nothing else to do than play the old games again (or wait for the inevitable fan made Fallout 3).
The part about the dialogue is inexcusable though, the Oblivion dialogue system is so shit that I cant even begin to think of where to start. A horrible horrible mistake to keep that design.

I wasn't really expecting an 2D isometric game engine with sprites and all the 1998 things in it. But; I was hoping that Beth could atleast make an advanced RPG and a sequel to Fallout 2, instead we are basically served a game that is so far from the storyline that it would be the sequel of Brotherhood of Steel (aka. PoS)For the record, I'd have no Fallout at all, rather than what I've seen now. They don't need a license that is worth so much to a huge amount of players, when they could just create a generic PA action game. They should have let Troika have it, would have been so much better.

hmm peris and i agree

tbqh I thought Fallout's combat was rather shit - granted I first played the game approx 9 years after it was originally released, so standards have changed. But still, I mean at least for the first few hours you play the game, its all just clicking on some stupid ant or gecko or scorpion and missing 75% of the time. It wouldn't be such an exercise in futility if it didn't take so long. When you think about it, all the Action Point thing did was determine rate of fire - if you have a small gun, you could crank off 3 shots in the same time it took your enemy with a huge gun to fire once. The only difference is your action points didn't 'roll over', so if you use 5 out of 9 action points in one turn, you lose those 4 APs. Where did they go? Did you and your enemy just stand around for 4APs worth of time, chatted a bit then went back to shooting each other?
I don't know, to me it just seemed tedious to fight, so I spent most of my time figuring out ways to either avoid battle or be tricky to hedge things in my favor, like locking doors, sniping people from long range, or simply just getting a huge gun and trying to get as close as possible and hoping for a critical hit on the first burst, if not, reload until I get it. That is sort of what its all about in Fallout 2, trying to design a set of weapons that'll do the most damage for whatever ammount of AP you have.
The thing that really made Fallout 1/2 good was the immersive story, variety of gameplay options and tactics, the sheer size of it, and the vast skills and perks system. I'm not shedding any tears about the combat system changing. I'm not sure what they're changing to will be good or not, I think I'll just have to play it to decide for myself.
I've never played Obvlivion so I don't know of this voice system, but I'll take everyone's word for it that its crap. I hope they fix whatever was wrong with it, because the conversation is a huge part of fallout.
I kinda like the change in setting, could be interesting. Maybe more city ruins like we saw in the teaser. Mountains, forest... Ohh maybe some crazies from appalachia
Some backwoods rednecks turned into backwoods redneck mutants

I understand how hardcore fans of the Fallout series feel dissapointed by
Bethesda. I don't mean the people who were
"Oh Fallout 3, I loved those games." when Bethesda first announced the game.
What I mean is the people at NMA who've for years been waiting
for someone to make a sequel worthy to carry the Fallout name.
How would people react if Square-Enix announced they're making
the next Final Fantasy a first person rpg with a new combat system
and gameplay?

the same way. i dont think that just because a game carries the name of a title it is per se "sacred" in a way so it'll be untouched. again, games change with the times, you cannot expect something back from the '90s to appear in a '08 product. you see the same with movie sequels, some actually take a twist and become good in a different way. people who bitch over stuff like this are living in the past, and it's their own damn fault they can't wake up and realize this a new age. somebody ought to kick them in the shin so they'd wake up and get a job.
game hype wise however, i do think that it would have been more beneficial for bethesda to wait with releasing content from it until closer to a release date, since some fans are so uptight with it (see st0lve). it would get the die hard fans anyway, but i guess that way they'd avoid a whole lot of conflicts and whiners.

*sigh* I feel like I've lost 5% of my brain cells after reading sentura's posts.
-
You really thing so Sentura? HL2 Ep2 is gonna be isometric and turn based combat. Do you think that people would be like "oh fine, no problem"? You have to be kidding.
About me not wanting a Fallout 3 game, is because the game Bethesda is making, isn't Fallout 3. It's the 5th game in the Fallout series, except that Fallout "3" (aka this) is so far off, that Brotherhood of Steel is more correct when it comes to the storyline and such. If it was a spin-off, it would be ok, but calling it Fallout 3 is just wrong.
Peris, there are more than 11 angry guys over at NMA, and you can't forget Duck and Cover, RPG Codex and all the other smaller sites who actually want a "true" sequel, and not this. By "true" sequel, that doesn't mean that they have to use 1998 tech, but just making a game that is "correct" when it comes to art style, storyline and such, cause for now, they have failed with 80% of what we've seen in the pictures..

how would you propose that? the same art (from what i can deduct from various sketches and the teaser) looks like fallout. but please, if you know how to make the "real" fallout style, why not go tell them personally? i mean, it's not like it's gonna help by posting the same thing over and over again here.
also you seem worried by the story, which is sort of weird. even if we do take in account that the first two games were linked (although through a missing generation), the third installment doesn't have to follow that line. i don't get why you are so overzealous over this.

It's more a conflict between industrial game developing and the little studios of before actually, to me though ..

st0lve, stop geeking out and just wait for the game to be released before you write it off. Jesus.
This thread has become incredibly sad.
