What do you consider Digimon...

One of my clients is doing analysis of various kids/boys action licenses.

So the question came up about Digimon. Yes, there are many little Digimon games on PS2, PS1, Xbox, GameCube, GBA, NDS...whatever. And everyone considers Digimon to be a licensed brand.

On Namco's website for Digimon Worlds DS, here is the legal text for the game:

    Quote

DIGIMON WORLD® DS © 2006 Akiyoshi Hongo, Toei Animation. ® & © 1997 - 2006 Bandai. DIGIMON, DIGITAL MONSTERS, DIGIMON WORLD and all related logos, names and distinctive likenesses thereof are the property of Bandai/Toei Animation. © 2006 NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. All rights reserved.

So obviously Bandai the toy maker owns Digimon and then the merged Namco/Bandai entity publishes the games...

But what is the source of the Digimon license for the video games?

    - Digimon toys?

    - Digimon TV show?

    - Digimon manga?

    - Digimon cardgame?

I think it is a cards game but became really popular with the TV show about kids being in an adventure involving card playing?

I don't know anything about the source of Digimon. I've only seen a few

episodes of the anime on TV years ago. I say Pokemon is a far superior

    brand to Digimon.

According to the Internets Digimon started out as a Tamagotchi and was released by Bandai in 1997. In the same year they produced a card game, and some dude named Hiroshi Izawa made a manga about it that proved to be popular and they hastily produced an anime based on it (presumably to cash in on pokemon's success). The games came much later.

At the bottom of the article someone argues that Digimon did not rip off Pokemon because of how early the initial toy was conceived, which is in itself misleading because the initial toy was nothing like the pokemon clone it was later... So don't take that as gospel.

I'd only heard of it as a TV series though, and not watched it past the introduction.

Edit: Must stop messing about with this post.

I've heard the name but I don't know what it is. The "mon" bit makes it sound like Pokemon. But not.

I remember them as they tamogotchi pets first and foremost. Having fights with them on the school fields in lunch breaks.

Sorry - but I didn't really understand what you were asking in the thread.

If I were to answer properly I would say it comes to my mind first and foremost as a cartoon.

I thought the games and cards came after as marketing.

Digimon has no slow motion so rick_d wouldn't like it.

    They still are.

Digimon is only 'popular' because of furries
