Pirating Games

    I own only 2 genuine games: Half-Life 2 (because of the sdk and multiplayer mode) and Sim City 4 (because they made some mistake in the store and it was really cheap, like 3 dollars ).

    I just can't afford these games (a genuine PS2 game here costs around 130 dollars ) so I pirate them as a form of protest. Same goes for music and software (ffs a 3d studio copy here costs just as much as a cheap PC ).

    I don't plan on stopping pirating games unless they start to sell them at realistic prices. It's a cultural thing to be honest. Even our president was found watching a pirated DVD during an official trip to Africa some time ago.

    if you pirate then better keep it to yourself. no need to make you feel more comfortable with it by ranting about if its a bad thing to do or not. its illegal as simple as that.

    everyone who uses the internet will probably pirate stuff, if its music, applications or games or even photos you dont own for textures. and everyone knows it. no need to go public.

    just my thoughts.

    i actualy went legit a couple of month ago and bougehd all movies and games i ever downloaded and liked/wanted to support ( the other ones can go suck and die !!! ) i see it like mazy FULL demos !

    i would have done the same with music if it wasnt for the apple/microsoft/musicindustry triangle of chaos to throgh things into the air rigth now and see how it falls down and lands

    ... i dont know were i should buy stuff so that i get a legit license for song x that i can listen to on any hardware i feel like. and which store has all that wired exotic stuff i listen to anyway ? it seams liek alot of stuff i hear YOU CAN NOT BUY

    software ... i own a legit windows 2000 copy because i wanted to have a safe feelign using the windows updater to get the neccesary security updates .... maya iam covered by my company everythign else i use is freeware/open-source except Photoshop ....

    I would have bougehd photoshop years ago if it wasnt so damn difficult ! how many forms do i have to fill out ???

    how many thirdparty product providers (or what ever the hell they are called ... retailers ??? why dont they have stores on the street ?) do i have to contact ????

    how much registration must happen ????

    how can it be that there are so many different pricing and licens options/models ????

    why dont they sell older versions for less ??? ( everything after Ps7 BLEW)

    do i really need to go to ebay to get a ps 7 license ??? ( iam totaly gonna get raped there )

    i really want to buy ps 7 TODAY ! but i just cant under these cirucmstances !

    i dont mind other people doing it a whole lot though, theyre free to do it and make up their own minds about it, im not about to try and stop them.

    well if i walk into a store that has 10 copys of "awsome the game" and i steel one it has only 9 left they can sell if i download "awsome the game" theres still the one copy on the server that was there before i downlaoded it ... think about that ^^

    Well I try to buy as much as possible as I like. That goes with everything really, games, movies, music.

    I buy a lot of music digitally now as well and one of the largest reasons for that is it can't really be found otherwise and it's so simple and fast and you know you get a good quality (plus supporting the artists you like who are really doing this becuase they love music)

    i dont know about other people but i think pirating can really encourage sales in some cases.

    For instance, i downloaded titan quest awhile ago. A game which to me seemed like it would be mediocre quality and certainly not worthy of the highly select grade of games ill buy every year. I played the game for a few hours, found that i really enjoyed it, then went to the store and bought it, something i would never do on faith, even with a favourable review in PCG. This same type of thing has happened to me several times now.

    My older brother had the same experience with music piracy. He was not a music afficionado in general when he was younger. Rarely listened to music and had no defined tastes. When napster hit the world he got heavy into downloading. Today he has one of the largest cd music collections of anyone i know, i can say fairly certainly without the ability to experiment online he wouldnt have the collection he does.

    As it applies to movies, im simply not going to pay to see many movies in theatres that might still be interesting enough to grab off torrent. (I dont think my girlfriend would agree to see 'snakes on a plane')

    Piracy may not be moral in many peoples eyes, but besides revenue and all the mental equations people are doing (including myself just now) I see it as an overwhelmingly positive thing in terms of culture. That minotauro or a person living in a third world country can still have access to the same music and media of the affluent west, is necessary. I dont think art should suffer the kind of corporate restraints the various publishing industries instill. Besides simple opportunism i view the explosion of pirated media as a reaction to that control. I guess my view basically is buy if you can, steal if you have to.

    The problem is a lot of people don't have to steal, but given the opportunity they will. Im not saying this is always the case but a lot of times it is, and those are the sales that are really lost.

    If you pirate, I don't want to hear about it in a place where it's not even relevant (generalvivi ).

    As for the whole piracy thing, I'm all for giving developers/artists what they deserve, I just wish they didnt choke it up with DRM (or in the case of starforce, malware).

    And I really wish people would stop calling piracy "stealing". Online Piracy is not stealing, its Copyright Infringment, however the difference in no way justifies piracy. Both are very much illegal, but very different.

    My Windows is legal now, although before it wasn't legitimate. I don't pirate games unless the Demo didn't convince me it was awesome enough and I think "Whatever, might as well download it...". I certiantly don't consider this a good excuse or that it by any means justies it.

    However, if the game turns out to be absolutely awesome (I pirated Deus Ex : IW and Thief 3 when they came out) I go out and buy it to support the development team.
