So a while back I made a complete set of animated water textures for Half-Life 2, but over a period of time I could never find out how to actually implement them into Source. Well, thanks to some useful tutorials I finally completed a water Shader for Source. Please remember: this is just a test so I know the water looks fugly as hell. I just wanted to see if it was actually possible to replace the water and it properly reflect the environment. The next phase is making it pretty, and then finally releasing it. Here are some images...

So, I figured out why its so bumpy. For water, it takes a very, very subtle normal map otherwise it looks like rough seas. Also, remember that this is actually animated and it moves properly.

I'd be interested in seeing a proper "rough seas" one though. That could look very good in a 3d skybox

Modified the normal map and recompiled. Looks a lot better in my opinion. I'll be getting a video shortly, but in the meantime some screenshots:

No, but I consider it a shader since it uses a DUDV map.

I already fixed that. In the animated sequence, it was missing one of the frames therefore appeared it didn't tile correctly. All is well now.

The normalmap is still to strong. Calm it down and noise it a bit.

when i first read custom water shader i was mad exited the hl2 water shader doesnt do anything phenomenal that other games cant do (actual most games do the exact same stuff a second scene render + fersnel + distortion + volumetric fog below all on an animated normal map or on some scrollign normal layers) BUT that animted normal map from hl2 IS JUST SOOOOOOO DAMN GOOD !!!!!!!!

it looks 10 kabillion times better than what any other game has to offer ... when ever i see somthign like this i want to try to up the bar another notch and make an even cooler animated normal map but i just have absolutly no idea how make one that tiles properly so i toughed that you might have found the answer for me unfortunalty this screenshot shows that you have the same problem:

seam on the left or not...

MAD KUDOS keep up the great work

You need to write proper material shaders. Thats no coding at all.
