Anyone play the demo? A huge # of ppl have downloaded it on Xbox Live it seems, plus it went out on the OXM disk this month. Lotta fun. I know I'll be playing it.
Saint's Row on 360

I enjoyed it. Seriously - make a big, fat asian guy with ginger cornrows and mangle his face up with the customising tools; you can't NOT like the game when your lead character looks like that yet is still trying to act like a bad ass
Dunno if I'll be buying it as there are a fair few games I'm after for the 360 hitting soon (Dead Rising, N3, Test Drive Unlimited, Enchanted Arms), but it might just make the list. -
It was actually surprisingly well made. That's not to say that I was terribly impressed, but the graphics are pretty good, nice to see a GTA-clone with some nice shadows
. Also stuff like how the vehicle handles, running around and shooting was pretty good stuff. Might be a bit too much ripping off GTA in terms of missions and structure but what the hell, why fix something if it aint broken
-
The game looks like ass and it resembles gta too much i hate it and i havent even played it.
-
Whats with all the negative nancies around here lately?
Dennis - granted, the game is completely based upon the GTA series, but its hardly the only game to draw from others is it? Don't hate the game purely because it is derivative, as if you did, you'd have missed out on plenty of classics over the years. It does not look like ass, and given that you haven't actually played the game you aren't really in much of a position to claim that they do. I wish people would give things a chance before jumping on the hate wagon... -
Seems quite cool from what ive seen on the demo.
You can have big fun with the ragdolls

Shame the fps is pretty bad sometimes when you drive a vehicle.

they look bland and their animations suck.
The cars look alright(modelwise) but the shaders look shitty doesnt do the game much good.
And im not a negative nancy i just strongly dislike this title
besides its MY opinion im not trying to keep people from playing the game
-
You're right, some of the animations really do suck, but oddly, some of the others are really quite good. Walking slowly, for example, makes the character walk with a really cheesy swagger thats really well done, while others, such as the jumping animation, are just laughably poor. Bit of a mixed bag I guess. Anyway, I wouldn't ever claim this is the best looking game around or anything, but regardless, it doesn't look like ass.

I enjoy creating stupid looking people, one guy I made was fairly close to looking like Joe Camel - LINK, and it was funny to see him walk around since he was so damn ridiculous. Plus the fact that you can at any time change your character to look like something else is nice.
Yeah its a GTA-clone. So what? I agree with Mazzle. No reason to fix something that isn't broken. They actually fixed somethings that bugged me with GTA - being able to move your camera/gun while in a car and fire in that direction for example.
If a game is fun then I am going to play it since playing games that are fun is a whole lot better than games that suck (Duh). Also hitting someone and making them go flying with Ragdoll Physics then to have them animation blend and get up and walk away seamlessly is great!

-
i think it's a lot of fun. Personally I find it easier to control than GTA for shooting and driving, but that may be because i just never got into GTA like the other 17 million people who did...
I think it's going to do well given the lull of big 360 games in Sept time frame other than Madden in a week or two.

This is a wreckless opinion. Blatantly stealing other people's work and repackaging it as your own is not something to be encouraged. Perhaps if it was Brothers in Arms they were blatantly stealing you wouldn't be so cheery about it. Or Mazy, if it were Hitman?
Shame.
-
maybe people would play bia that time around

-
I don't think many customers are going to "shame" the game by not buying it becuase it's a gta clone. If it's fun, people will buy it. I would rather see one game blatantly copy another game on the chance it might make some improvements on it and force everyone else in the genre to innovate to stand out from the rest. There is no way to be a huge success and not get cloned. The market will decide.
I would welcome anyone to make a clone of any game I made, if someone else does it better, than maybe I should step up and innovate show poeple why my game is still the best in the genre. Can't copyright gameplay and it would be a damn shame if you could.

I played it, fun for a bit, very detailed, but the cops really suck, AI is stupid especiall the Five O, but being a complete GTA clone, its got its better assests and game mechanics

If someone made a WWII game where you control a squad as easily maybe, but Squad combat done as effectively as we have done it in BIA hasn't been done. I love to see someone else do it, to see their ideas and to see if they improved on anything. Frankly that hasn't happened yet. MOH:PA and Republic Commando are some examples of crappy implementation, even GRAW had bad implementation.
Mercenaries is fairly the Same sandbox game like GTA. Wide open areas, vehicles, various factions you can please and piss off, but since it takes place in Rural Korea is it a rip off? Just because of its setting?

That is why I buy games. Games are supposed to be fun, if I don't entertain me, then its a waste of money (Destroy All Humans, From Russia with Love).
(2nd point) That is why ESPN and Madden were good to go hand in hand. Can't say they are rip offs since they both dealt with Football, but they would constantly try to one up each other, but then once EA got the offical licence their competition went bye-bye. I would like to see more competition amongst games, but that is why so many games each have their own special features so they don't draw comparisons to the Big names.
[/Holy Crap]
EDIT: VVVV - Oh yeah forgot all about FF

Well, actually I'd say that the squad mechanics in Freedom Fighters were at least as effective as in BIA, but they do each serve a different kind of purpose (BIA being heavily realistic cover and flanking based, where FF was more arcadey
). In fact when I first saw BIA, I saw it as a FF ripoff in its squad mechanics, but after trying the game I could see that they were a lot different~Anyway, regarding copying or being inspired by other games then I think these sort of free roaming shooter games lend best to being copied since the entire point is exploration of a new world. I mean you could easily get away with copying something like GTA, where as doing a Katamari Damacy clone would be a lot harder to do without being blamed for ripping off their gameplay.
But I totally agree with Mojo, if its fun then who cares. I play games to have fun, and if its a shameless ripoff that's poorly put together then it's gonna get a bashing, but otherwise it'll only perfect whats already been done in some cases.

Played the demo tonight, thought it was completely shitty and ridiculous. The framerate drops constantly, it offers absolutely nothing new from the GTA series of games, and generally just feels unexciting because of it. I guess people will buy it to fill the gap between now and when the latest GTA actually comes out on the 360. The game is just not fun at all.

Funny...I just could not get into GTA: San Andreas at all, mainly because I didn't like the controls
Then I play Saint's Row demo, which I admit is highly derivative from GTA:SA, but somehow despite the framerate drops and perhaps not the best graphics ever and overthetop gansta violence that seemed ridiculously stupid, I really enjoyed the demo. Looking back, it did a lot of things with craptacularocity.
But still, I really enjoyed it. Maybe I'm lowering my standards...maybe I'm saying "I'm a friggin idiot for liking this derivative piece of underwhelming technical and artistic video gaming."
But I still enjoyed it and am looking forward to the full game later this month.

Oh for the record, I loved Mercenaries. That was my vote for console game of the year for 2005 and I told the Pandemic guys that several times...though they still never gave me a job. :sigh:

this demo was a good, fun, decent, solid game. The art ain't inspired but it's sharp and clear, renders nicely in HD. The visual tech is a good step up from GTA. Biggest gripe was the car camera being unresponsive when I'm trying to back up out of a sticky spot, or get going again after backing out.
character creation was really solid and good fun, gta has needed this for awhile.
plus MULTIPLAYER come on guys
