Awesome movies (no mainstream)

    Requiem For A Dream is fucking horrible. Yikes. Wathed it at the worst possible time. Awesome film, but so nasty.

    There is a very decent Welsh film about the First World War abouta bloke named Hedd Wyn. It's kind of incomprehensible, even with subs, because you have to know about Eisteddfods and all that shit, but still a good film, nominated fo an Oscar if brains serves.

    Clerks.

    A very rude and vulgar comedy about a day in the life of two store clerks. It is black and white and very low bugeted, but it is a comdey classic, and has some very good laughs. It is probally one of the most vulgar films I have ever seen.

    Not sure if these were mainstream or not. Some may have been backed by hollywood studios, but they weren't well remembered.

    Primer

    Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

    Better Luck Tomorrow

    A group of over-achieving Asian-American high school seniors enjoy a power trip when they dip into extra-curricular criminal activities.

    Trainspotting

    Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.

    Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels

    Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.

    I Heart Huckabees

    A husband-and-wife team play detective, but not in the traditional sense. Instead, the happy duo helps others solve their existential issues, the kind that keep you up at night, wondering what it all means.

    Garden State

    A quietly troubled young man returns home for his mother's funeral after being estranged from his family for a decade.

    The Corporation

    Documentary that looks at the concept of the corporation throughout recent history up to its present-day dominance.

    And I saw Brick today: Amazing. Nuff said.

    Azumi

    I don't think the film lives up to the thread's title of "awesome", but Azumi is an enjoyable movie nonetheless. Its about a group of assassins raised from childhood with one mission in mind - to kill the Japanese warlords and bring peace to the country. Azumi is the only female member of this group, and though she is the central character, she's not really particularly interesting. I found the movie interesting more due to the side characters, who aren't exactly well developed but are given enough screen time for you to warm to them and care about their fate. It comes across rather low budget at the beginning and seems to ramp up in quality as the movie progresses, ending in fairly big budget style with a massive fight involving hundreds of casualties across a whole town. Its a straightforward movie that probably thinks itself a lot deeper and more noteworthy than it actually is, but its a decent watch if you are into films about ninjas and the like The sequel, which I just watched last night, was much the same but ultimately a lesser film for me.

    Touching the Void

    The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.

    It's one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. I don't like

    rockclimbing or mountains and still I found the film extremely

    enjoyable. A very emotional ending.

    (BTW. Anyone know any good non-mainstream films

    that have a sad/touching ending ?)

    Taegukgi - Brotherhood of War

    A group of Korean archeologists find a skeleton and identify it as Lee Jin-Seok. But Lee Jin-Seok is still alive and he is now an old man. It is his brother Jin-Tae who went missing in the Korean War. We travel from the present to 1950, when the Korean War started. Jin-Seok and Jin-Tae, Jin-Seok's brother, are young men who suddenly find themselves catapulted into a bloody world so different from their quiet, rural lives. As the war progresses, the war begins to poison Jin-Tae's mind. Jin-Seok is lost when he finds that he no longer knows who his brother is.
