Seriously though, I gotta agree, target group and air time are not in sync there

I remember watching Batman the cartoon or the simpsons around that time when I was ~10 (on the same channel), now kids around this age watch middle aged women talking about their sex life...in fact not only talking

It sounds prude but this is not right, also not for German/European standards.

If I had a kid, I'd try to actually be a parent and talk with my kid about what TV is okay and isn't okay for them to watch. The same way I'd take an interest in what video games they were playing to make sure they weren't playing games that were too mature for them. The same way I would make sure they would see movies that were age appropriate.

To be honest I'll be the most liberal father on this planet (if I ever have a kid that is). My fathers always let me watch any TV programs (even the ones with sex, drugs and rock 'n roll) and I'm not an idiot. Maybe I'm an exception ?

Well yeah seriously now, they souldn't be airing that show at 6 pm. It won't turn kids into idiots but stuff like that make kids lose the best of their childhood: Naiveness.

I think it's some kind of delusion for adults that kids are totally ignorant of sex and stuff. I was playing Duke Nukem 3D when I was like eight, and I know the same applies to lots of other people. I also caught glimpses of violent films, heard about sex at school, etc.

A lot of people assume they even though they were exposed to sex at a young age and turned out fine, nobody else was. Mino's comment above about thinking he's an exception is a classic example of this.

The fact is that almost everybody is exposed to sex/etc at a young age because they're unavoidable components of human life. I'm sorry if that comes to a surprise to anyone, but it's a fact. Kids aren't as naive/unexposed/innocent as you'd like to think, and there's nothing you can do about it save for removing all electrics in the home and preventing them from attending school.

While I don't agree with showing that programme at 6pm since it's clearly inappropriate enough to piss off a lot of people, I think the "Omg it is stripping away the kids' innocence!" comments are complete nonsense. The only thing it's stripping away is parents' confidence that their kids don't know about sex, drugs and sex. xD

Kids dont need TV to see people talk about (or actually have) sex anymore. That was back in the days. The internet has opened up so many doors for everyone who can get to them. So I don't really see this as a problem, the real problem is like Fletch said the parent's that don't watch over there children well enough.

On premium cable it is uncensored. On basic cable syndication it is censored (would be about PG-13ish).

As for the responsibility of the media, I don't really think it's the state's duty to enforce morality into the media. It always starts with good intentions and ends up being a slipperly slope to censorship and forced morality. The industry is best served when it self polices. But when the government gets involved to try to be everybody's parent, bad stuff always goes down. Morality gets politicized. Minority views gets squelched. It never ends well.

So yeah, if you don't like it don't watch it and don't let your kids watch it. If you want your range of influence to go any farther than that, send a letter to the TV station, complain to the broadcaster, or encourage your friends to boycott. But bitching fromt he sidelines doesn't help.

My girlfriend watches it religiously. She has had sex with me and one other person is as far as I'm concerned the farthest thing from someone being promiscious. Fletch hit it on the nail that its the parents' responsiblities, not a company or government to teach morality and ethics to their children. I for one would not let my children watch that. And I'd be furious if the government tried to step in and do the parenting instead of me.

As the others who share the same opinion as you already said: You cannot survey 24/7 what your kids do. Well, I guess you can, but then you need the other parent to feed you and the kid, you can't sleep, kinda like how birds do it, one always guards the nest while...er I get carried away here.

Instead of controling the media, you control your children, who will at some point "see it, hear it" anyway! You are contradicting yourselves

Steppenwolf, i agree with you. First i thought, what's so horrible if they show Sex and the city every day.. then i noticed 6pm. I like the show, but it's so true that there are way too harsh scenes for kids' eyes.

Odd that they're actually showing it on that time. They've been showing it on every workday for a while here in Finland, but it's like 10:30pm.
