i agree it's really something special, but i get bored of running thorugh completely random corridors shooting the same 3 enemies over and over.

just read the Gamespot review....they didn't like it that much. As I predicted, not a bad game, just not the best of all time. From the reviews (both good and moderate) the game does feel like another Doom3 type experience but with some different gameplay  I admit that's not all bad but this game isn't going to be a huge hit based on the vibe I'm getting about it from reading the reviews. At this point I'd love to rent it on 360 since it's hard to rent on PC.

    Thoughts?

Some guys I work with cancelled their order and will be renting it instead. They're console guys anyway, so the PC version was out of the question.

I know my next purchase will be a 360. To me it's just the right equipment in order not to spend 4 times the 360 bill on a good PC, money I don't have anyway. And Prey is one of these games that won't make me upgrade my PC "just because". HL2 fell in that category, but not Prey....by far

IGN of course being reputable and not at all swayed by the advertisements splashed all over their sites.

I played the full game at a friends. Its totally worth it, spirit mode gets a bit repeditive but the majority of the game that I played was a lot of fun. Tons of maps.

You dont actually die in this game so it probaly makes the game much faster to complete. Even the loading times are shorter in Prey which is a nice addition.

yeh Ign gave it to much Gamespot to litle, its all part of the war

truth is prolly somewhere in the middle, i dont really trust either of them because its all about the ads/goodies and money they receive that determines what type of review/journalist you get

personally i truly like the demo, as being weird and cool to try out the upside down all around stuff, respect for the leveldesigners, im sure they had some kinda tool to flip their maps otherwise i would prolly go insane

worth the buy?, well im sure the Sp has some fun in it, we played the mp at work and it was fun for about a week, then we all sorta got bored with it, not enough weapons or truly insane weapons, only 8 people and spawning right behind someone that just killed you and prolly has really low health..

anyways im not getting it because while i enjoyed the demo it would prolly not last for me because its not really a game genre i play normally

I'm going to hold off and probably play the game when it is cheaper.

After playing the demo (which I did find fun), and in contrast to what most of the ShackNews groupies would say, I don't think this game is innovative in the way some people are claiming. To hear some people talk, no FPS game will ever be the same again after Prey.

It has a few neat gameplay mechanics (ceiling tracks, gravity changes, spirit-walking) that open up a few interesting puzzle ideas, but overall, it hasn't done anything to revolutionize the FPS genre. AI is still bland. Weapons (in the demo) are mediocre and generic. And gameplay in general is just the same old shoot-stuff-that-moves formula.

Level design is interesting, only because of the gravity shifting; otherwise, I've seen these levels before in Doom3 and Quake4. Will Quake Wars be the first Doom Engine game that doesn't look like all the rest? I hope so. Otherwise, it looked as pretty as the Doom Engine can manage.

Story seemed pretty cheesy to me and some of the voice acting wasn't that great. Monster design seems kind of uninspired. I don't like the death minigame; not because it's hard or anything (quite the opposite), but because it seems lame and handholdingish to me. Just give me godmode and let me periodically play minigames.

I give the game an extra point for Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" when the aliens abduct you.

    Prey = 7/10

It is on the list of things to buy by the company so I'll most certainly check it out.

i found the first 10 minutes to be super totally awesome. especially because barracuda was playing but as time went on, it got very generic and redundant like any other game. walk around some random corridor and shoot one of 4 possible creatures. sure the crazy portals and stuff were neat/nifty. i actually got a bit motionsicknessy at one part, but it just got a little silly after a while. the map seemed to have 0 function other than a completely linear shoot aliens space ship.

Meh, I don't buy that, but I still think it deserves some hearty praise - it's no genre-shaper (nor should it be - it doesn't offer anything that should be in every shooter from now on, that'd be annoying! ), but for one title to have what this one does, I'm having a blast with it. It's a fun twist on standard FPS-style play and has some really snazzy elements. Can't wait to try out some ideas in MP maps.

For being a straight up shooter, adding the new combat and puzzle elements of the portals (the useable ones, at least - the ones that appear are just a fancy effect for standard monster spawning) is more than enough for me to get a good bit of fun out of it. What makes the combat fun to me isn't any leap in the AI intelligence, but just the fact that now I'm tracking them on the ceiling, walls, and everywhere in between. For being 3D for so many years, most shooters still focus you to a 2D train of thought in combat - nothing against said games (I've been plenty guilty of contributing to this myself in a few spots, heh), but to have a game break that down I think is really fun.

Don't get me wrong, I did really like the demo, but I'm used to hearing some of the ShackNews guys talk about it, and some of them think it's the new Halflife. I do plan on playing the full game, I just might wait a little while. I've heard some things about people finishing it in 8 hours, but I may be hearing a rumor incorrectly.

And yes, Polaris, I did review a demo.

haha, yeah, I've been reading those same posts. A little over-done on the ShackHype meter.

I've seen a lot about the length being around 8, with some people mentioning 10. I got a little over 10 out of HL2, though, so that doesn't really bother me that much.

It really isn't the new HL to me, but what do I know....Sure, there are some very nice gameplay additions (wall walking, portals, spirit walk) but the atmosphere doesn't sell the game. Besides the too shiny Doom III graphics, the ambiance is just too repetitive, there aren't any things happening that you don't expect from a mile away.

Besides, story telling was one of the things that set HL apart. And story telling in Prey is non existant. I've played for over 2 hours (lunch break) at work today and even well beyond where the demo ended, I still have no idea what it is I'm doing. It's just the same "Oh look, my gf shows up from nowhere every 10 minutes, just to remind me I still have to save her...". When is the alien master plan coming into play????

Well, after 4 hours of playing the game, the game has finally evolved into something fun. Actually really fun. The first boss you get to fight (3 hours in the game at least mind you) is very very good. Then you get your first vehicle after 4 hours......

It's just too long, it could be so much better if there weren't so many down moments in the story telling...
