Eurogamer: Lost Coast was clearly a successful way of demoing and testing HDR and the commentary system. Do you plan to roll out more tech demos soon?

Gabe Newell: Yeah, we have a couple...

    Eurogamer: This year?

    Gabe Newell: This year, yes.

Eurogamer: Are you planning to talk about those soon?

Gabe Newell: Yes, now that Episode One's done.

More free goodies from Valve. God I want to play on some of those cut levels

There was also talk of actual expansions ala Blue Shift and Opposing Force.

    Let us dance!

Yea, It would be fun to play from Barney's pov again, or maybe they will do another character. But nothing is really official yet.

i hope they release that level aboard a boat that was cut, it looked pretty neat. i couldn't imagine putting so much work into somthing like that and never having it see the light of day.

Speaking of which, i just read on ign that valve says the half-life 2 episodes are taking the place of half-life 3. Not sure why they didn't just call it Half-Life 3:Episode 1...

yeah a Half-Life 2 version of Blue Shift would be cool since theres a lot of points in the game (like 99% of the time) where you don't know wtf Barney's doing. So a lot of freedom available just so long as he appears where he was in hl2.

I'm looking forward to those new tech demos they're focusing on atm supposedly out this year. Said they had ''a couple''.

Actually I heard just the opposite. They were tired of going on 5-6 years projects without releasing anything, so they went the opposite way (episodes) while preparing an HL3 which would be as revolutionary tech wise as HL1 and HL2 were for their times...

Don't worry there will be a real Half-Life 3 after Episode 1-3. Nobody lets such a great (and great selling) franchise down.

I thought that would work?! Can't you just compile a map with HDR and then play it in your mod?

I wish to see some of the Ep1 features and entities available for mapping and moding soon.

Valve havn't done an SDK update in months, if not a year. We need the backend code for all there new stuff like HDR.

They keep pushing back the date of updating it, sure it was originally gonna be updated with DoD:S release...then a few weeks later..then maybe before Ep.1...now who knows.

I'm still waiting for the source code to be able to compile in Visual Studio 2005 Express

I'd rather not have an install of vs2003 right next to my install vs2005.

Hopefull Gearbox will make the "Opposing Force" styled expansion.

Cause it is the best expansion ever made in the entire history.

I'm not sure Adrian Shepard would have the same effect as he once did. I'm curious what you think would be a good opfor style expansion for the game. Being a combine would be strange because they're just zombie'd little prune lookin' dudes who can't talk so much.

What I believe is a strangely interesting story is the two characters from Decay [ps2 hl] (one of which is the hazard course hologram lady, Gina.) They were the other two HEV suits that were missing when Gordon got there. They were also the people that pushed the sample into the chamber for Gordon. So where did they end up?

They never went to Xen at the end.

They fought that big manta ray thing in a Black Mesa Canyon at the end of Decay.

While I agree that OpFor is still the best expansion pack of all time, the only aspect of that was dissapointing was that you barely, if at all, got to interact or fight with Gordon Freeman. And in some of the marketing hype it made it seem like you were on a mission to "Kill Gordon Freeman."

But by the time I played OpFor and got through it I didn't care because it was just so awesome.

Mike's right that original HL lent itself to that kind of expansion because the grunts had potential for personality (being human...military culture) and there was so much mystery behind them and the potential links to the Gman in Gordon's experience. And with the Combine, it just feels different.

Still I think a good game could be made where you play as an ass kicking combine, but some serious thought would have to go into it to integrate into HL2 story and keep up the quality, esp given Mike's point.

Saying that Opposing Force is the best mission pack of all time is pushing it a bit imho, besides that title belong's to Quake's 'Dissolution Of Eternity'

No they're quite right, Opposing Force is the best expansion of all time.
