Hey, the whole "insufficient supply" and "exceptionally high launch price" thing worked for Sega Saturn.

I'd rather buy an xbox then pay half a grand for a ps3... for fuck's sake.

Man, Nintendo have had Sony all over so far.

It may have a literally pish name, but the Wii is far too special.

I also loved Reggie joking about the name, Nintendo just makes it so much easier to love them instead of those Sony suits ~

And the 32X. Kolibri was a fucking awesome launch title too!

Don't you recall one of the top Sony guys, I forget which, who predicted that gamers would gladly save up their money to pay for the PS3 as it would be a premuim system and status symbol...

Anyway, a lot of industry analysts still think Sony is going to lead market share and the Blu-Ray will help pave the way, as PS3 owners will be able to watch Blu-Ray DVDs without needing to buy an additional player.

That certainly is a valid strategy, just I am not clear how it's going to unfold in the beginning for core gamers. At what point does a gamer say "$500 or $600" is worth it...plus the fact that in the beginning, you know there will be a hardware shortage and a black market. Any price sensitive core/casual gamer who really wants a new system is going to be shut out and forced to buy a Wii.

I think Sony's best move right now is to announce some kick ass exclusive content (games) at launch. Oh wait, I and everyone else has been saying that. So what do they have at launch?

FF XIII...er...will this be ready for launch?

    MGS4....2007 game right now.

GTA IV....2007...and will ship on X360

Sonic the Hedgehog...a launch title...but is this going to be a killer app?

Resistance: Fall of Man...a launch title...and a new IP...could be good, but again is this the killer app?

Gran Turismo HD...no date yet....GT is one of the staples of the PS consoles. I have played all of them and like them, and they have a great brand recognition. Will it be ready for launch? It could be a launch racing killer app just because of the brand recognition, but no date set, so ain't gonna help the launch that much until we hear otherwise.

Warhawk...resurrecting a PlayStation game for the next generation...the screens etc look cool, but it's no GTA / FF / MGS / GT....even if it turns out to kick ass it just doesn't have the same mass appeal, though I think it at least looks like it could be fun. No release date set yet...so doubt it's a launch title and certainly not a killer app.

Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken 6...both very well known PS/PS2 fighting games. Usually at launch of a new console there have been a good locking fighting game so users can show off their system. VF5 is slated for 2007 and Tekken 6 doesn't even have a date yet.

So roll your eyeballs....at this point the launch game content on PS3 doesn't strike me as enough to get me to buy the console in 2006 or early 2007. I admit there will be games I'm going to want to play on PS3, but this just gives me more reason to have fun with a new Wii system and save some cash until there is really something compelling on PS3 that I just have to play...else if every new high res DVD is Blu-Ray I might buy the PS3 for the dual functionality.

Bottom line, I'm still waiting for a compelling reason to fork over that much money for a PS3. I'll be at the show tomorrow and Friday, so I'm hoping to get a better understanding of all this and post some more thoughts after the show is over.

I'll wait it out and make a choice based on game selection - like always.
