Garry's Mod

I don't see all the fuss about it. He worked his balls off making it, so good luck to him.

I'm not really too impressed with valve cashing in on a 'fun' mod (given that the traditional mod stance was that if valve bought it, they'd sell it retail style but also leave it as free to the people who already own a copy of the game on which the mod is based), but I can't blame Garry for it; I'd do the same thing myself if I were in his position.

The only questionable aspect is the fact that Garry took donations and grants donators privileges.. and now all of that will probably be kicked away. This is a reason why I feel people should always think long and hard before giving anything in return for donations (as it puts a different complexion on things, it becomes more like 'buying' under a different name) or indeed taking donations at all. It creates conflicts of interest, expectations of support and it also means, as Garry said, petition online will probably explode as a result of this decision. Of course it's easy for me to say this (regarding donations) though because I'm not in Garry's position and, while I'm not even close to rich (monitor is giving out and I can't afford a new one) I do live fairly comfortably considering I'm a student with a tiny bank loan and no job.

Still though, say you have donated and now you feel you've been jipped, it's only $10.

It's not so much that I care he's charging money for a mod, it's just that this sets a really stupid precedent. Now every mod that think's they're tough shit is going to start trying to charge. Which means you're going to have more 15 year old mod leaders trying to screw people over for $200 bucks.

Yeah but that's been waiting in the wings for quite some time. I suppose this just formalises things. Garry's mod is somewhat different in that he coded pretty much all of it; it was a personal project that was in the right place at the right time and caught people's imaginations.

I totally agree that the whole "Let's make a pretentious studio name and act like we're big time-charlies who want to sell the mod" is totally irritating and fucks up the mod community to a degree, though.

There's nothing like seeing people bail out of your mod and join another without so much as a "goodbye", or other mods attempting to poach your team members... (the latter has happened to us a few times). Potentially putting money on the line just makes it a lot worse.

Additionally: I'm sure development studios who've had to pay for a license will be delighted to see modders being handed them for nothing (albiet for a larger cut of the sales). I wouldn't be surprised if you see modders and small indie developers making more profit on certain projects compared to full studios with large overheads and licensing costs who push out an poorly-received game. Whether that would be justice is another matter!

Yeah I don't think he worked that hard on it.

As much as it is a sandbox and goof-off mod, it has a lot of cool stuff in it that nobody else has done (or at least extended to the degree gmod has).

God I miss the days when mods were made for fun. I wish more of those 15 year old mod leaders understood that mod != retail.

Well..they can't. Because thats illegal unless Valve buys the rights to the mod ala CS, DoD and now Gmod.

He didn't really work as hard as some of you guys think. Probably the hardest part he had to implement was the VGUI, and he had someone literally do that for him. So many people have contributed to Garry's Mod, that is should be named "Community Mod". He's a bit egotistcal and tyrannical if you ask me.

Gary is notorious for instabaning any critics of his mod. I've talked to the guy, and imho he's a total egotistical asshole.

But maybe I just forgot how hard it is to turn console commands into a GUI.

Erm, I'm not sure how you got that impression Section Eight. He hangs around in the Mapcore IRC channel all the time, and he comes across as a very passive person to me and actually completely downplays any references to his fame. Not to mention that he recently refunded a $999 Paypal donation that some kid sent without his mother's permission when asked, which I can't see many other people doing. Asshole? I think not.

I really can't think of a word that seems more unfitting than egotistical. Are you sure you're talking about the same person here, and not some random impersonator?

Are you apart of the G-mod forums, or ever viewed them? I personally am not, but I have been told aswell there are bans given out for suggestions, complaints, insulting or flaming, without even warning. Many times when I view the forums I notice several, more than needed I would say, users with "Banned" underneath their name.

Edit: Paypal has a refund feature now, Garry didn't have to. The people could of retrieved it with simple assistance of Paypal, and likely Garry just knew it and didn't want to make it a fuss. And one occurance of being thoughtful doesn't redeem previous actions. But again, I don't know Garry well-enough to say anything about him personally. Just from an outside perspective.

I was, but got the hell out of there once things started spiralling towards the “insanity” side of popularity. I think few people wouldn't get a bit snappy considering the comments that I've seen posted on there. ~

You're right, things can get snappy. But a mod going retail you want to keep the best reputation you can towards your community to give a good word. I guess I think if someone joins forums, requests something. Gets banned. I doubt he's now going to buy Garry's Mod for 10 bucks.

Perhaps he's been a little over-zealous, or perhaps it was simply his mods. I can't really comment on his actions on the forums since I haven't witnessed them.

All I can attest to is that Garry comes across as a really nice guy on IRC, and I can't think of one instance where I've seen him act unreasonably. When I see people using the description “egotistical asshole”, it just seems so distant from the Garry I know that it's kind of confusing.

Perhaps he has a split personality disorder.

Perhaps. But then again, theres two different motives that would trigger a different personality.

Really no one bothers the guy on IRC, I only seen him say something once or twice, so he never really is bombarded with questions or anything.

Forums he's likely going to get frustrated when daily theres a flood of topics of insults, flaming, suggestions, requests. Just needs to keep his cool.
