Girl suspended from U.S. school over red highlights in hair

    Girl Pulled From Class Over Hair Color

    MARSHALL, Mo. -- An eighth-grader was taken out of class Tuesday because of her hair coloring, KMBC's Marcus Moore reported.

    An administrator at Bueker Middle School said the girl's red highlights were distracting to other students.

    School officials said there is a rule at Bueker that hairstyles that are distracting to the educational process are not allowed.

    "Doing this is taking away from people's individuality," Kristen McCorkle said.

    The 14-year-old, who is a straight-A student, said the school's assistant principal told her she had to go to in-school suspension and that she would be there until her hair is fixed.

    "I didn't think that any of this would happen," the eighth-grader said.

    She said she understands that some hairstyles can be distracting, but she doesn't think hers is.

    "Like colors that are totally out of the norm, blue, or green, or purple. But I think red is more normal and I don't think that many people would disagree with me," she said.

    "I don't feel that her hair is out of control," said Tim McCorkle, the girl's father. "It's definitely not outside of the boundaries that we have established here in the home."

    The district's superintendent, Dr. Robert Gordon, said he was alerted to the situation Tuesday afternoon.

    "This, as I understand it, is a matter of interpretation. I believe the assistant principal was doing what he felt was in the best interest of the kids," Gordon said.

    Tim McCorkle, who is the Bates City police chief, said the school's policy needs to be reviewed.

    "As one who has written policies, some need to be updated or sometimes they're just wrong," he said.

    Gordon said he plans to speak with the student's parents about the situation.

    Meanwhile, Kristen said the hair coloring was an accident. She didn't expect the highlights to be so strong and she plans to tone it down as soon as possible.

    One week my old secondary school decided to ban hoodies. Anyone wearing them would be sent to detention at break times. Monday was the grace day and you were given warnings and told to take it off.

    By wednesday half the school was in detention (~800 people) and thus was promptly given up enforcing it.

    That is hardly surprising though. I mean, a lot of places have strict uniform regulations, so banning hoodies is about as tame as it comes I guess if the majority of people were wearing hoodies to school though, that it would be a hard one to enforce.

    Closest example to this that I had in my school days, was a mate who had a piercing below their bottom lip was forced to replace the spike thing he had in it with something smaller. Hardly in the same league as this example though. I can't believe that they truly thought her hair colour was distracting. For what, the first 10 seconds of seeing it? After that, its not like people would be staring at her hair instead of doing work. Unless they meant it as "with that hairstyle you are too hot and the boys are staring - make it uglier"

    theres a video of her on that news site too...you can barely see the red... it's not like bright shiny red....its just darker than the otherwise bright hair with a HINT of red....its stupid

    That color is like rust tho, you should have seen my red, damn it was red, and dont get me started at the "devil haircut" i had.

    Anyway, in Sweden we have discussions if its right to tell foreginers to remove thier veil when reading news on public tv, so i guess its bad the other way around.

    The only distracting i can see is that shes HOOOOOOT

    I am kinda against hoodies myself. Its just that all the ppl wearing them think theyre so cool that its embarassing to even watch them walk
