    Maybe I'm reading too far into it, but :

    What are you trying to say here?

    That this older man is interested in the other side? That perhaps the grass being greener on his side doesn't actually equate to livability. That he's actually bored and sometimes the bad and the good colliding is really what makes life worth living?

    Drawing these messages out a bit could be interesting.

    On the other hand, leaving something to guess and not making it to literary could be interesting as well. I'd keep it this way.

    if its a WIP, it could use alot more misery on the nuked side. Burning angels falling from the sky, a small child that is not yet hit by the shockwave standing on the other side of the fence. It would be cool
