Already covered with the World of Level Design Link, but this helped me a lot understanding the meaning of Choke Points.

Since tools are apparently posted here, I might as well post mine, Compile Pal.

It's a wrapper for the source map compiling tools that provides easy configuration and better UI.

It's got things like batch compile support, basic automatic file packing (for prototyping) and progress display on the taskbar:

Huh. Do you have the latest .NET framework? I am also using win7 64bit so this is strange.

Gave this a go and seems an excellent tool to use. Doesn't freeze my computer like compiling in hammer.

Had a few issues though. One was the log doesn't update until an entire line is complete, so when portal flow is compiling for example, I cant see the progress. It will only display once its fully done. On Pakistan this part takes hours so would like immediate feedback like in the hammer compiler

Another issue was that if I cancel a compile during vvis, there is a good chance that when I recompile without closing compile pal, vvis wont work anymore and the compile will get stuck.

Figured I'd ask this here rather than create a new thread, so can anyone recommend any books on Games Design? I'm gonna pick up 'Level Up!' by Scott Rodgers and wondered if there was anything else worth a read.

Level Up! is perfect if you want to create a platformer for the PS2, but it doesn't offer much more tbh. I picked up the 2nd edition released this year and it seems nobody actually bothered to sense-check it because it's full of references to ideas that don't get introduced for several pages. First edition might be better, but this one was a mess and very limited in scope.

I'd recommend A Theory of Fun for Game Design by Raph Koster for a more broad but insightful look at game design that introduces many ideas that are applicable to all sorts of genres and platforms.

A Game Design Vocabulary by Anna Antropy and Naomi Clark is a really interesting read (especially the first half by Antropy) for more abstract contemporary ideas, but it can feel a bit pretentious at times, and like Scott Rogers it can get a bit "narrow".

I've made this video for people who wish to map for Mapster32 and Eduke32. How to install the tools and get everything ready for mapping. More tutorials to come.

ENGLISH AND SPANISH SUBTITLES. Must be toggled .

Besides using Mapster and other programs, is there another side to create maps? And might aswell ask, are there any helpful books and websites (besides this one) that will allow me to progress?

For people wanting to get into modelling for Source (With Blender)

    https://cloud.blender.org/p/game-asset-c…44a2a00d0d7e069 or http://store.steampowered.com/app/373020/?l=dutch

I just bought it on Steam (€10 instead of min. 3months on Blender Cloud) and it seems good so far!

Thanks for the suggestion! Recently started dabbling around in Blender and this will surely help :)
