    Heya!

Well, after working on this map for like 4 months it's done now.

Soon it's time for release of this deathmatch map.

    I hopes you like it.

It's a small island called "lost souls" with docks and a big church and small town and a grave yard nearby the church.

Since this map was supposed to be included in a mod the mod died and now I'm releasing this map as an official dm map. Stand by..

Well what is better then a different theme?

Isnt it better with an island instead of those craped doom3 sci fiction corridors. Lets give it some atmosphere.

Anyway maybye some people will play this map instead of seeing it being dumped into the trashcan and removed for ever...

    Comments are welcome guys.

Displacement in the first pic is too blocky for me, i'd make those sharp corners smoother near the water. Grey wall texture aint that good in the 2nd pic and i'd also use different kinda light which is pointing to the walls, something.. longer to make it look more powerful or something. 3rd pic looks nice

Mistmod screwed it up and doesnt exist and wont exist more, wich of course feels sad to me when a 50 % mod kills it self of problems as hosting and other shit. I had to work on the map for everyday and it has been a nice progress on it and we made so many different concepts for maps and layouts..

My next project after lostsouls were lost docks that was in the works in jan 2005 before mistmod's deadline. We were like 40 - 50 staff members, half of them of course innactive. Me and richard aka "neoptolemus" is good friends and he made "sunset caverns" for mist too. I had many friends in mist, many great friends.. But i lost many of them since mist suddenly one day dissapeared from the site. And all our work that we saved to the ftp is gone..

We had like, 5 maps done, 2 more to do. LIke over 30 models for maps, 20 weapon models, black buccaners, the cut throats were finnished player models. Tuxit "the coder guy" was allready done with the FGD. source and all we had to do were to finnish the 2 maps and skin all the models done. ...

 Reality slapped me hard in the face the day mist was gone.

Now im releasing my best work as a hl2dm map, and the layout is professional design by the team. Well, nothing I can do. But that is shit what have happened to us. We lost all the fans, all and everything.

Yeah real sad to hear... but as for your map, I really like the atmosphere but as Peri said work can be done on the textures and models. But also think some contrast in lighting and shadows would be appropiate in certain places.

yeah that really sucks Nexus, i was looking forward to that mod, somewhat . Maybe u should save the map for another mod or something. I think its a bad idea to waste it on DM maps, Use it for CSS at least.

Yes you are right Dark but what style then? hostage or defuse..

I think a defuse map so you can place the bomb in the church.

I have to think about it. But wait is it more css players now then hl2dm?

i dont like the roofs on your buildings. Spend more time adjusting your brushwork to make them look better. I have a tutorial over in snarkpit about brushwork and one with texturing that could help improve your overall look. Your lighting looks alright but I"d get more contrast and variation on tones to help the overall feel.Trees are too barren and simply bring it down. Yeah they're custom but at this point i'd simply go back to using valve's stuff unless you can find something better.

your first pic is my favorite. Yeah the displacements are low poly, but thats fine. Keep it that way. Instead massage your vertex's to get a smoother transition for the water. You've spent resources to make them reflect, so instead of adding polys, massage your vertexs until they're forming a less acute angle. Your lighting seems very misty. But those overly green ugly tree's are ruining the mood for me I'm sorry to say. Personaly i'd like to see how trees with yellow leaves would look. I think they'd help bring the map out better.

Thanks for the hint Ferret. With your feedback is now much easier to understand the maps low and bad side. I have to experiment with the lighting or maybye find a skybox for the map. Since I am using shirokos tree models i want that the map "it feels like on the map" as a island with jungle.. The warm climat theme you know. Heh but I'm glad that you like the map! I'll see what i can do about the map. And what you have seen on the screens is only ½ of the map. So dont think it's all

well dont design your level based off of a model. Design your level, define your atmosphere, and use what art assetts that best enhance the level. Right now those tree's are what bring it down. Want green tree's? Fine maybe desaturate the green a little bit. But right now the green is taking control of my attention. Think of it as a moving piece of art. yOu want what is most important to garner the viewer's attention. Subjects in art are displayed with warm bright colors. Your warmest color, or at least the one that takes most of my attention, is that green. Its not the best model, not knocking the artist, however it simply isn't the best that could enhance your level .Maybe find someone within the community to help you. But finding a better prop would simply help the level.

Hm... You're right there. I know the trees is taking it over, but i need them too. IF i removed half of them the map would look empty and you had nowhere to hide when the trees is like camouflage for the level. I have to search after some other tree model that fits the maps theme. I feels that the level needs some work.

i think they are fine, they look better then hl2, if u use hl2, it will take the jungle feel out of it. I do understand where Ferret is coming from, but i doubt you will find better tree's then that, if u do, defenitlly replace them, but either way if your map has fun factor, no one will care.

You should add displacements to your roofs.

Yeah, there's a definite good feeling to it, Nexus. Don't give up on this map either way.
