What if the universe is bent and has nothing but itself outside.
A piece of paper has borders, but if you bend it say into a sphere the borders disappear.
EDIT: Hah, Peri just mentioned a sphere too, 2 minutes earlier ![]()

Quote from KosmoWell, since you have obviously been thinking this long and hard, tell us where did your pointless think tank lead you? Is there chocolate milk beyond the universe?
obviously Kosmo, your unconscious mind is like the universe out beyond the quasars. If the universe was a sphere floating in nothing, the center and boarder of the sphere could be in your mind . The universe could literally be as small as a halloween pumpkin in all stages of growth outside of which everything is possible

Yeah cosmic, but think about this, what if human race was just a race with cars?
what do you mean? I wasnt joking about the pumpkin stuff
Well.. I don't know how something could fit inside itself in to an object one hundred billionth the size of it. But I agree that objects usually are comparable to it's surroundings, and if it floats in the nothing, it is comparable to the smallest and the biggest thing at the same time.
excellent kosmo!! This is deep stuff even for peris
But still, in human race, who crosses the finishing line first?
....No
Space in the universe is expanding at a accelerating rate, no new energy or mass is being generated as far as we know. Right now it is at something like 80 billions light years in diameter if it is a sphere. It is creating its own space. If we were to generate a universe in a laboratory (which might actually be possible) it would create its own space and not have any affect on our space time continuum.
Why is it doing this? Good question…
Like people have mentioned string theory and its more recent counter part M theory provide some of the best answers the most brilliant minds in science can give… here is a brief outline, of the theory, many of this cannot be proven for a while until the technology provides a method…
Quarks and all other subatomic particles can be broken down into strings… these strings are super super super tiny strings of energy. There are different types, some string are half loops with both ends tied to our universe, some with just one end tied down and some that are closed strings and flow freely through our universe. They are tied down into a 2 dimensional membrane called a p-brane in the 11th dimension. How many of these membranes are there? Perhaps infinite, all contain universes with different, perhaps random, sets of physical laws (many probably don’t even have space)
The vibrations of these strings denote the characteristics of the sub-atomic particles they create, and particles like the higgs boson and and many other particles are kind of responsible for space (theres a lot of stuff we don't know about this yet).
That’s a rough abstract… there so much too it and so many different theories…
So how can we prove this?
Well in 2008 or so the Large Hadron Collider will be completed at CERN in Europe… It will be the most powerful to date and they hope that it can detect some of necessary components for string theory, like the graviton…
If they see the graviton for a second, then see it a vanish, the theory is that is left our universe and floats freely through all the other parallel universes that are micrometers away from us at all times…
Here are some links… I suggest you look into them as they are very interesting…

This thread reminds me of this one time in Chemistry class when a teacher asked some stupid girl what was between atoms. Her reply: "Air"
there is a void ![]()
Thank you JonM for coming here and presenting a theory as undeniable fact
Now, I'm not saying that it isn't true, I'm a supporter of the expanding universe theory, but by no means we have empirical evidence of it in such a large scale that we can say that for sure.
Great write though.
why the "....no" tho?
Quote from RDwhy the "....no" tho?
This is just guesswork, but I think he said no to everything written before in this thread, since he wrote the expanding universe theory as an actual fact and something that is undeniably happening right now.
But that is just my guess, I believe that he just wrote the thing not considering how it sounds, not necessarily how he believes things are.
Quote from Pericolos0uhhh... but the universe is expanding, all the galaxies we observe are moving away from us. At an accelerating rate actually. This is a fact
But the string theory is not a fact... yet.
cars move away from me all the time, it doesnt mean the road is expanding
the ...No was in response to the pudding and other stupid stuff that was said.
There is empirical evidence to suggest the expanding universe and the Big Bang theory.... String Theory not so much though
An intresting idea is that the universe will expand so large that it will not have enough energy to hold itself together anymore and will collapse in what is called "The Big Crunch"

If the universe expands too large how can it collapse? Where do these theories come from, the clown school?
Quote from Pericolos0how is that even a valid analogy?
It's RD, you are thinking it too much.
Quote from KosmoIf the universe expands too large how can it collapse? Where do these theories come from, the clown school?
It comes from physics ![]()
