I only buy a couple of console games a year (mainly PS2 although I own a Gamecube).

My pick would have to be Metal Gear Solid 3. Amazing gameplay, visuals, musical score and of course, story. Hideo Kojima is god.

I still havn't played RE4 yet! My Gamecube's been gathering dust ever since I wore out Super Mario Sunshine but I'll definately pick it up when I've got a couple of days (and quid) to spare!

Oh, and Psychonauts demo rocked! I'll have to get a copy shipped to me here in rainy old Britain.

It was a toss up between Re4 and Shadow of the Colossus

until I realized RE4 is way better.

I have the soundtrack in my car .... man...makes me want to play that game over and over...sequel can't come fast enough. I heard his Medal of Honor music, and htat is good, but if you listen to the whole Mercs soundtrack you realize how much he has evolved as a composer. Just blows me away.

Yeah I haven't played God of War though. I should really just go get it.

Speaking of console music, though, I got the two Katamari Damacy games' music last night. My God, talk about best fucking ever. It is the ultimate ':D' music.

Yes RE4 was amazing. I bought for my cousin and he played on my Cube...i didn't play it but i watched him play a lot and i can see why it is a top contender for a console GOTY. Certainaly a shoe-in for the Cube.

Anyway, knowing all the guys at Pandemic, I am sort of biased towards Mercenaries. Still...I think it is my top Xbox game of all time, in that I had more fun playing that than Halo, Halo2, Brothers in Arms, GTA:SA etc...and those are three awesome games.

    Why so much fun?

    - Music (best ever for a video game imho)

    - Open ended military action and easy to control (easier than GTA imho)

    - Very good/funny writing dialogue. Sure the story wasn't that deep, but the voice acting was excellent and it drew you in

    - blowing the shit out of just about everything via airstrikes or whatever

    - totally open ended mission structure that allowed for creativity

    - some actual non-linearity in mission order (ok, pseudo non linear, even though it really was a linear story)

    - buying airstrikes, vehicles etc and having them delivered on the fly

    - Mercs just made me feel like i was "somewhere" when playing, similar to how GTA makes you feel like you are in a larger, colorful world.

    - the attitude.

I just can't put in my small little brainey wainey how people love RE series so much, I have tried the earlier three but just didn't like them enough to really get in to them. Maybe I should try out RE4 for kicks.

RE4 really is a whole new game - liking the earlier games in the series almost makes you LESS likely to enjoy 4
