Tech demo or not, it was a highly enjoyable (and free) single player level. Had a blast. Very cool combat situations and fights. Yet another example of how to make a linear romp feel like you're far more free than you actually are. ![]()
It was pretty cool, though some of the lighting effects were way too over-the-top. The light beams in the church windows come to mind. I didn't really care much for everything being super shiny now. The weapons and the terrain materials close to the water were a little over done.
Valve seems to be trying to play catch up. ![]()
I adored the wet cliff textures near the sea - looked spiffy. Commentary rocks too, hope that feature is used more often in the future, both by Valve and other companies. I don't really see how people can say "not worth the wait" - the time would have passed whether Lost Coast was coming or not. Unless you mean the download time, in which case your point might have some justification.
It's a techdemo. Would it be better if it was simply a camera following a track through the map?
wow I was so suprised when it suddenly ended... I was ilke "IS THAT IT?"
Well those were some fun jumping puzzles...
Let's see, HL2 without HDR runs buttery smooth. HL2 with HDR chugs. HL2 without HDR exits properly back to windows. HL2 with HDR crashes my computer when I try to exit.
Winnar: Epic
Worked fine here, and my PC has half the requirements than what it needed. HDR worked nicely too. Looks very sexy, level was looking great, but overall gameplay was quite boring. Still a nice level.

A shitty computer that manages to run Quake 4, F.E.A.R. and COD2.. yes.
There's nothing special about it seriously, more graphical features.. wooo, how about working on the gameplay instead..huh?
The only reason that you run these games is because your card simply isn't rendering the higher-end visuals. At least, unless you've upgraded since we last discussed your hardware situation. Even a Voodoo 3 can run Doom 3 at a decent framerate. The defining difference being, of course, that it looks like shit in comparison to someone enjoying it on a 6600GT.
As for gameplay, they did that pretty damn well in HL2 in my opinion, and there's a chance that Aftermath will contain good stuff too. They never claimed that Lost Coast was going to be a fun experience; it's a tech demo. Sadly, the effect is kind of lost since we've all, you know, been enjoying HDR in DOD:S for a good few weeks. Just finished it myself and overall I am not impressed. My card does not support HDR but Crytek did this long ago so it's not really exciting anyways.
My problem with Lost Coast is that it still got most of the problems HL2 and Source also had. The water shader is still both unrealistic and poor looking compared to the one in FarCry. To me it looks like they haven't changed it at all. Another problem with the water is also the edges as those are 100% static without any shore effect which all games in 2005 should have.
When the bombs hit the town there were not visual impact at all which was really dissapointing. The good part of the canon was the shake when launching as it affected window shaders nicely and also physcics effects. The most impressive was that it was actually not overdone like many of the other features.
There were some unaligned textures in several places which also annoyed me a lot. The untextured surface or whatever it was you could see when breaking the windows in the church and looking left was also dissapointing.
I've always been very fond of Source's water, although it only seems to really translate smoothly into an urban/busy environment where there's plenty of contrast and such for it to distort. The Farcry water wins by a mile when it comes to the edges of an island and coastal type stuff, with all the shoreline effects and such. Source water is pretty shit at that, especially when you see it going off into the distance and can see the water's texture repeating its face off.
i love the hl2 water shader

Nah, sam GF4 and I know full well I'm not seeing any DX9 stuff, but at least they run!
Oh don't get me wrong about HL2, it was really fun and I am very much looking forward to Aftermath but I sure as Hell wont be downloading a 300mb file that doesn't really do much and like you said DOD:S has it anyway so it's kinda pointless. I'd expect a tech demo to be no more than 50mb...
new update today:
QuoteWe hope everyone is enjoying Lost Coast. We've received a number of e-mails with positive feedback about the commentary system included in Lost Coast, so it's a safe bet that we'll look for ways to include commentary in future products. We're now going to be looking toward releasing some new Counter-Strike: Source content we've been working on. The next two maps coming will be updated versions of de_nuke and de_militia, along with a number of new player models for both sides. We'll give everyone a sneak peek at Nuke and some of the new models next week.

Two weeks ago we mentioned our affinity for all things zombie, along with the note that someone here at Valve had made a short movie on the subject. Zombie Movie has won Best Comedy Horror Short down at Screamfest L.A. and we're looking forward to delivering the movie over Steam soon. We think everyone will get a kick out of it.
by de_militia i hope they mean cs_militia

Hell, I find the water in Morrowind a lot more sexier. When I first played it I was amazed by the water. In HL2, it didn't look that great ![]()
